The city of Indianapolis is located in the state of Indiana, United States. The population was estimated to be 864,447 as of 2019. It is the capital and largest city of the Hoosier State. The metropolitan area has a population of 2,943,000 people.
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans who were displaced from their homelands in Ohio and Illinois. In 1816, the first permanent settlement was established on the site of today's downtown Indianapolis. It was named "New Town" after New York City where many of its settlers had come from. By 1840, it became known as Indianapolis.

It has more than 500,000 square feet of exhibit space and a collection of over 200,000 objects that includes toys, games, books, clothing, art, music, and technology.
