India Peritoneal Dialysis Market: Growth Drivers, Segments, and Competitive Landscape
Kidney disease is one of India's most pressing and least-addressed health challenges. As diabetes and hypertension become more common, more people progress to chronic kidney disease and eventually kidney failure. Against this backdrop, the India peritoneal dialysis market is gaining attention from healthcare providers, policymakers, and medical device manufacturers. According to Fortune Business Insight, the market was valued at USD 43.1 million in 2018 and is projected to reach USD 145.8 million by 2032, a CAGR of 9.1% over the forecast period.
Understanding Kidney Failure and the Role of Dialysis
Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys lose the ability to filter waste from the blood. Healthy kidneys remove toxins and send them to the bladder for excretion. Several factors can damage this process, including kidney trauma, exposure to certain medicines and environmental pollutants, severe dehydration, and various acute and chronic diseases.
The condition rarely appears overnight. It usually progresses slowly over years through the stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and ends in stage 5, known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). At that point, patients have two main options: dialysis or a kidney transplant.
Dialysis comes in two forms, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis is further divided into continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). It is considered one of the initial and long-term dialysis therapies, and it is one of the most commonly used home dialysis modalities.
Market Size and Growth Outlook
Fortune Business Insight describes the Indian market as severely underpenetrated. Many patients with CKD and ESRD are not on dialysis, and an even smaller number receive peritoneal dialysis. That gap represents a large opportunity for growth.
Fortune Business Insight also reports that the market is projected to reach USD 79.0 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 9.0% over the 2019-2025 forecast period. Both projections point to steady, sustained expansion.
Key Market Drivers
Rising Prevalence of CKD and ESRD
The most significant driver is the growing prevalence of kidney failure and ESRD, which enlarges the pool of patients needing dialysis. Rising rates of diabetes and hypertension are contributing to the increase in ESRD cases.
According to Fortune Business Insight, citing the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme, about 2.2 lakh new ESRD patients are added in India every year. This creates additional demand for 3.4 crore dialysis sessions annually.
Peritoneal dialysis also offers clear advantages for patients. These include:
Fewer dietary restrictions
No need for regular visits to dialysis centers
Portability
Less weight gain than with hemodialysis
Supportive Government Initiatives
Government policy is the second major driver. The Indian health ministry has established guidelines to improve access to peritoneal dialysis, which can be performed at home. This matters most for patients in rural areas, who often pay extra to travel long distances to dialysis centers.
According to Fortune Business Insight, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced plans in May 2019 to offer peritoneal dialysis to kidney patients under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP). In October 2019, it announced a new set of guidelines for peritoneal dialysis services under the same programme.
Including peritoneal dialysis in the PMNDP is expected to reduce patients' out-of-pocket expenditure. The government's push also reflects several practical benefits of the therapy:
Lower technical infrastructure requirements
Better productivity for patients
A better quality of life at a lower cost
Initiatives such as PD First are also expected to support market growth.
Market Segmentation
By Type
The market is divided into continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). According to Fortune Business Insight, CAPD held a dominant share of the Indian market in 2018 and is expected to stay in the lead during the forecast period, driven by the increasing prevalence of advanced kidney failure such as ESRD.
Cost is a major factor. Hemodialysis is currently substantially cheaper than peritoneal dialysis. Within peritoneal dialysis, however, CAPD is cheaper than APD, largely because APD requires expensive cyclers.
By Product
By product, the market covers devices (cyclers and machines), PD solutions and fluids, PD sets, and catheters.
According to Fortune Business Insight, PD solutions and fluids hold the highest share, because large volumes of fluid are needed for every treatment. Catheters hold the second-largest share, as their use rises with the number of procedures.
The devices segment is expected to grow at a comparatively slower CAGR. The high cost of APD cyclers limits adoption, and while both CAPD and APD cost more than hemodialysis, APD costs are significantly higher. This confines APD to a fraction of the population.
Rural Access and the Push for Wider Adoption
One notable trend is the work of a small but determined group of doctors who are leading efforts to expand peritoneal dialysis in rural areas. Rural patients face real obstacles, including the distance from home to dialysis centers and a lack of reliable transport. Because peritoneal dialysis can be performed at home, it addresses these barriers directly. According to Fortune Business Insight, these efforts are expected to contribute to market growth.
Competitive Landscape
Fortune Business Insight expects Baxter to dominate the Indian market, holding the majority share thanks to its strong product portfolio and strategic decisions. Its products in India include HOMECHOICE CLARIA with SHARESOURCE for renal care and DIANEAL Low Calcium Peritoneal Dialysis Solution 1.5% Dextrose.
Domestic players such as Mitra Industries (P) Ltd are also present. Other companies operating in the market include:
Medtronic
Cook India
Poly Medicure Limited
Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. KGaA
ADfusion
Fortune Business Insight notes that growing competition between domestic and international manufacturers is likely to support market growth during the forecast period.
Key Trends to Watch
Fortune Business Insight identifies several trends shaping the market:
Greater ease of use and convenience in treatment
Flexible treatment schedules
A substantial reduction in hospital visits
Positive government initiatives for wider adoption
A rising prevalence of ESRD
Challenges and Opportunities
The main challenge is cost. Peritoneal dialysis, and APD in particular, remains more expensive than hemodialysis, which limits uptake. Low penetration among ESRD patients also shows how much awareness and infrastructure still need to improve.
Several factors work in the market's favor. Government policy now supports home-based dialysis, the patient pool keeps growing, and domestic and international manufacturers are competing. If these trends continue, peritoneal dialysis could become a far more accessible option for patients across urban and rural India.
Conclusion
The Indian peritoneal dialysis market is growing from a small base, driven by rising kidney disease, supportive policy, and the practical advantages of home-based treatment. According to Fortune Business Insight, the market is projected to grow from USD 43.1 million in 2018 to USD 145.8 million by 2032. CAPD and PD solutions are expected to lead their segments, and Baxter is expected to hold the largest share. For manufacturers, healthcare providers, and policymakers, this is a market worth watching.
