Tough Guys (1986)
This cheesy comedy film stars Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas as two elderly train robbers recently released from prison trying to fit in with 1980s culture in LA. They soon find out that the same train they robbed will be making an anniversary run, so you can probably see where this is heading...
Late in the film we finally catch a glimpse of the beautiful streamlined Southern Pacific #4449, a 4-8-4 "Northern" built in 1941. Probably most well-known as America's "Freedom Train" in 1976, this beauty is immaculately restored and was up until recently operational at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland, OR.
Their simple-yet-effective method for hijacking the train. This was filmed at the old Taylor Yard, headquarters of the Southern Pacific RR, in Los Angeles. Today, this whole area has been turned into the Rio de Los Angeles State Park.
The gorgeous shots of the Daylight SP train making a run for the Mexico border were filmed on the old Eagle Mountain Railroad outside Joshua Tree, CA.
For the spectacular climax of the film where the engine blazes through the end-of-line into Mexico (convenient), a full-size mockup of one side of the 4449 was built out of wood and fiberglass and sank into the earth. Miraculously, this giant setpiece was stored in a garage in nearby Eagle Center, CA for over 30 years until it went up for auction in 2019 and sold for $130!
