Posse (1975)
Posse (1975)
This western follows Marshal Nightingale (Kirk Douglas), who will do anything to promote his image in his run for Senate. He captures notorious bank robber Jack Strawhorn (Bruce Dern) as a publicity stunt but things do not go according to plan. Kirk Douglas also directed this film, which was shot at and around Old Tucson Studios in Arizona.
The credits montage sequence features Virginia & Truckee #11 "Reno" pulling Nightingale's train through the Arizona countryside.
Nightingale recieves a warm reception in town as #11 pulls into the depot at Old Tucson. Sadly, this set and many of the surrounding buildings were lost in the fire in 1995. This was one of the few buildings that was not re-built afterwards. Nightingale's private car is Coach #19, which along with Engine #11 was badly burned in the fire. Today it is on display in Virginia City, NV.
Later in the film, after catching Strawhorn, Nightingale departs the depot on the back of Coach #19.
It doesn't take long for Strawhorn to make his escape.
Nightingale leads his men to save the horses from the burning stock car and pursue Strawhorn. This was no doubt a prop car built on a flatcar by the studio.
Meanwhile Strawhorn gets the better of them and steals the train.
An exciting chase ensues, with Nightingale transferring to the backwards-travelling engine from horseback, the stock car exploding, and backing through a tunnel.
Soon they make it back to the depot just in time for the town to pitch in with putting out the fire.
The train is seen one last time at the finale of the film as Nightingale's men abandon him to help Strawhorn escape.
