Love Me Tender (1956)
Love Me Tender (1956)
Elvis Presley's first foray into film acting was in this western, centered on a group of Confederate soldiers who make off with a stash of Union payroll at the close of the Civil War.
The passenger train carrying Union soldiers was led by Virginia & Truckee's famed #22, "Inyo" - on loan to Fox from Paramount. At the time, Fox owned several pieces of rolling stock that they stored at their backlot - "Fox Ranch" (now Malibu Creek State Park). Two of these coaches, Rockdale, Sandow & Southern RR Combo #3 and Dardanelle & Russellville Coach #14 were used in films from 1946-1972, until they were acquired by the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, CA. Coach #14 is undergoing restoration while #3 (featured in the above right shot) has been beautifully restored and is on display inside the car shed.
As for the Inyo - it's living out it's best life in Carson City, still operating on occasion at Nevada State RR Museum.
Much of the filming took place at the former 20th Century Fox Ranch, now Malibu Creek State Park. The ranch set was built adjacent to the upper parking lot. The house facade was leftover from earlier productions, including People Will Talk in 1951. The above photo is looking east across the lower parking lot toward Las Virgenes Road.

This is looking west, down the hill toward the lower parking lot.
This view is looking north toward Mulholland Drive (the open cliff face on the hillside).
This is looking NW toward the hill with a water tank on it.
Later in the film, the Inyo shows up again as "East Texas RR #6" with Coaches #3 & 14 as our heroes make a run for it from the federal authorities.
Interestingly enough, the last shots we see of the engine in this scene in closeup are actually Dardanelle & Russellville #8, which was purchased by Fox in 1940 (the cab is the giveaway). In 1971, it sold to Shortline Enterprises and worked on the Sierra Railroad before joining the Virginia & Truckee fleet in Carson City, NV where it is on display today at Nevada State Railroad Museum.
The cabin with the corral that Vance (Richard Egan) and Cathy (Debra Paget) are chased from was located directly west from the ranch location, down Crags Road and across Las Virgenes Creek. The field is in an off-trail area. It's so overgrown now it's hard to see, but the same high-angle vantage point can be seen at these coordinates: 34°05'52.8"N 118°43'16.9"W
As they come to a dead-end in the road, their only chance is to dive in the swamp. This was filmed at Century Dam on Century Lake at Malibu Creek State Park. This was also used in Planet of the Apes.
The waterfall seen in the film was shot at the Malibu Creek rock pools, also at the state park. This same exact spot was seen in Planet of the Apes, but from the other (west) side.
