The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
This classic western starring James Stewart as Senator Ransom Stoddard, who returns to his hometown for a funeral of an old friend and must face his past in a series of flashbacks.
Opening shots feature a 2-car passenger train heading through the plains. It's very difficult to tell but this appears to be Sierra RR #18 with Baggage #611 and Coach #2.
As the train pulls into "Shinbone" depot, we are now transported to MGM's Lot #3 in Culver City with the Virginia & Truckee's #22 "Inyo" in the lead. V&T Coach Combine #20 (renumbered as #21) and Coach #19 (as #16) follow behind. These 2 cars were owned by MGM at the time.
The Inyo and Coach #20 survive at Nevada State RR Museum in Carson City. Coach #19 was badly burned at Old Tucson and apparently the remains are stored here as well.
All of the town scenes were filmed on sets on MGM's Lot #3 backlot, which sadly has been completely demolished and turned into housing.
Scenes at the homestead were filmed at Janss Conejo Movie Ranch in Thousand Oaks, CA. This specific site has been developed into houses but the area around it is still very recognizable and is now Wildwood County Park.
The parting shot of the film shows a Sierra Railway train heading toward Chinese Camp in Tuolumne County, CA. It's very difficult to tell the makeup of the train, but it appears to be Sierra #3 followed by Coach #5 or 6, Coach #2, an unknown coach & Caboose #9. Many of these pieces are still on display at Railtown 1897 State Park in Jamestown, CA.
