It Happened to Jane (1959)
It Happened to Jane (1959)
This lighthearted film stars Doris Day as Jane Osgood, a single mother supporting her children with her lobster business in small-town Maine. When a big shipment is delayed by the railroad, she seeks compensation with the help of lawyer friend George (Jack Lemmon).
Early shots in the film's credits show the fictitous Eastern & Portland's "Old 97" arriving at "Cape Ann." Train scenes were filmed on the New York, New Haven & Hartford RR in Connecticut (today the Valley Railroad Company/Essex Steam Train). Instead of using the railroad's actual #97, they opted to utilize 1916 Alco Mikado #3016. Sadly, it was scrapped soon after filming.
Since nobody else seems to have undertaken it, I've tracked down as many of the film locations as I could...
The depot used in the film was located at Railroad Avenue & Grote Road outside Chester, CT (but no longer stands).

As Jane goes to the station to find out what happened, we get another nice view of the train.
Downtown Cape Ann was filmed on Main Street in Chester, CT.
The historic Chester Meeting House from 1793 serves as Cape Ann's town hall (4 Liberty St, Chester, CT).
Later, we get another great shot of the train pulling into town and the townsfolk coming to see the commotion.
Cape Ann's church was the United Church of Chester at 31 W Main Street in Chester, CT.
The cemetery scene was filmed at Chester's Old Cemetery at 6 Goose Road.
The footbridge in front of the falls appears to have been filmed on Pattaconk Brook toward Jennings Pond in Chester.

One of the film's big scenes features all of the townsfolk pitching in to help fill Old 97's tender with whatever coal they can find.
We are then treated to some great footage of the train passing through the Connecticut countryside before being held up by track work. At one point, we see the train cross Mill Creek from Saybrook Road in Haddam. Today, the Essex Steam Train operates on this same line from Essex but only goes as far as Deep River Landing.
After a brief stop, the train is back on track again. George even volunteers as fireman to keep things running.
Jane and friends cause a stir when they run out of steam in the middle of a track intersection, until the railroad men give in and give them a push.
We get a nice happy ending as the train pulls into Hartford Union Station.
A big celebration is held in downtown Cape Ann (Chester), where that nasty railroad man surprises everyone with a new fire engine.
