The Grey Fox (1982)
The Grey Fox (1982)
This small indie drama chronicles Canada's first train robbery and the main behind it, Bill Miner (Richard Farnsworth) - "The Gentleman Bandit." The story begins in Washington State and moves north to British Columbia. The filmmakers shot much of the film near the actual locations where the events took place, which lends a beauty and authenticity to the film that transports you to the final days of the wild west.
Northern Pacific steam engine #1070 of the Lake Whatcom Railway can be seen early in the film (except the wide shot in the river gorge) and in the first nighttime train robbery scene. This short excursion railroad operated for many years near Wickersham, WA but unfortunately has fallen on hard times and is no longer operational (although there have been recent efforts to bring it back). The steam engine and railroad equipment (including beautiful historic Northern Pacific Pullman cars) are stored onsite.
The shot of the train passing through the river gorge appears to be from a high vantage point above Cheakamus Canyon in British Columbia, and likely headed by Canadian Pacific #3716.
The scene of Miner digging shellfish appears to be out on the tideflats near Blanchard on Samish Bay, WA.
This scene early in the film was shot at the Sweeney Cooperage in Vancouver before the site was demolished to make way for Expo 86.
Once in Canada, Miner's next holdup is Canadian Pacific #897 - actually #3716 in disguise. This beauty still operates on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway in Summerland, BC. It was also seen in the Journey of Natty Gann.
Fort Steele Heritage Town just north of Cranbrook, BC plays the role of turn-of-the-century Kamloops. This beautifully restored old west town is open to tourists, and most of the buildings are open for exploration. Visitors to Fort Steele can also ride behind British Columbia Railway #1077, which was used in the film (as well as The Journey of Natty Gann & Shanghai Noon).
CPR #3716 is seen again chugging along as Miner barely gets off the tracks in time.
Some more spectacular shots of CPR #3716 pulling a passenger train through mountain scenery, likely Cheakamus Canyon between Squamish & Whistler, BC.
The next job is discussed next to a unique Canadian Pacific-style water tower very similar to one still standing in Brookmere, on the former Kettle Valley RR line (although that's not it).
More great nighttime shots before Miner holds up the train. It is seen crossing the Cheakamus Canyon Trestle. The Rocky Mountaineer train passes through here today.
Finally we catch a glimpse of BCR #1077 at the very end! Although I've yet to find the location of the depot...
