The Great Bank Robbery (1969)
The Great Bank Robbery (1969)
This campy comedy features a quirky bunch of characters trying to rob the heavily-fortified bank in the small town of "Friendly."
Right off the bat we are treated to some great footage of Sierra RR #3 (very colorfully painted) with Coach Combine #5, Coach #2 and what appears to be Pickering Caboose #4 (now at Niles Canyon Railway).
We see the robbers board the train via the caboose, shoot up Coach #2, and transfer into the Combine car.
It isn't long before Slade (Claude Akins) takes control and stops the engine.
Reverend Blue (Zero Mostel), Lyda (Kim Novak) and the other passengers are seen hiding out inside Coach #2.
In scenes set in Friendly, it appears a depot and water tower were constructed on Laramie Street on the Warner Brothers Studios backlot in Burbank (which has since been demolished). Here, you can catch a brief glimpse a tender and rear of a locomotive which I believe is Eureka & Palisade #4. This engine is privately owned in Nevada but fully restored and operational for special events. On the right is a photo I took of it in 2022 at the Great Western Steam Up in Carson City.
Late in the film, the Mexicans manage to jump on #3 on the turntable at Jamestown and make off with it. If you look closely in the background you can catch a rare glimpse of the original Jamestown depot (destroyed in fire) next to the freight depot, which is in use today by Railtown 1897 State Park.
The final chase of the film involves the stolen locomotive catching up to the balloon, only to be blown up on an old wood trestle. This trestle is located off Mono Way in East Sonora.
