Barbra Streisand's debut film performance as real-life entertainer Fanny Brice. Although the film takes place in New York City, much of the filming took place in Los Angeles.
The "Don't Rain On My Parade" musical number takes place within the old Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal in Jersey City, which had ceased operations shortly before filming. The DVD features an extensive look at the process of bringing it back to life for the film. Today it is designated as a National Historic Site and occasionally still hosts events and film shoots.
Midway through the song, we see Fanny on a "Baltimore & Ohio" train underway. This was filmed with ex-Canadian Pacific Railway #1278 (then owned by Steamtown and numbered #127) and 3 former CNJ coaches. This locomotive survives today on display at the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum in Sugarcreek, OH. The scene was filmed by helicopter on the High Bridge branch of the CNJ near Piccatinny Arsenal in Dover, NJ. Today, the coaches survive at the Black River & Western RR in New Jersey. Fanny rides in CNJ Club Car #322 "John L. Bishop," which is restored and still in service at BR&WRR.
