Colorado Territory (1949)
This exciting western stars Joel McCrea as recently-escaped outlaw Wes McQueen who is sucked into pulling off one more train robbery. Some spectacular footage was filmed on the Denver & Rio Grande Western RR in Colorado.
McQueen arrives at the "Aztec" depot (Durango's depot, still in use today) and tries to sneak a peek in the baggage express car. The train is headed by D&RGWR #315 and followed by Baggage Express/RPO #127 and Coaches #320, 284 and 306. #315 is a 2-8-0 built in 1895 and still runs special charters on both the Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec. The 1880s coaches can still be found at Colorado Railway Museum in Golden, CO. I haven't been able to find the fate of the RPO car.
As the train pulls out, McQueen sneaks on the back of Coach #306. We then see a traveling shot of the train going up into the mountains.
The old church hideout was filmed on a backlot set called "Juarez Square" at Warner Brothers Ranch in Woodland Hills, CA. Sadly, this whole ranch was sold off and redeveloped.
As McQueen returns to town, we see a group of lawmen waiting at the Durango depot.
As McQueen chases after the train, we get an amazing stunt sequence. These scenes were filmed on a now-disused stretch of the narrow gauge line along the Animas River from Durango to Farmington, NM. Today you can ride an even more spectacular stretch north of Durango on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge RR.
He's soon able to cut the coaches loose and leave the lawmen in the dust. Then his partners catch up in another great horse transfer sequence.
After cutting the engine loose, it turns into a standoff for the loot in the baggage car. McQueen escapes with the saddlebags just as the lawmen catch up.
We get one more shot of the train as the search party forms up back at the depot.
