Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (1969)
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (1969)
A classic western starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the famed train robbers.
The train sequences were shot entirely on the Denver & Rio Grande Western in Colorado, on what is now along the Durango & Silverton NGR. The opening scene utilized D&RGW #478 (repainted as UP #473) and Baggage Car #127 (which the film crew built on flatcar #6630). Today, #478 is on display at the Durango yard and Baggage #127 (which was later converted to a concession car) resides at the RR museum in Durango and is used as a movie theater.
Our first exciting robbery scene features Butch (Redford) jumping onto a passenger coach from the Rockwood Cut (37°29'26.9"N 107°47'38.6"W) and working his way up to the engine of the "Overland Express" - once again D&RGW #478. Three of D&RGW's replica coaches were used for filming: #330, 335 & 336. All are still used by Durango & Silverton NGR.
In the middle of the film we see the gang once again going after the Overland Express, utilizing a similar consist as before with the addition of a studio-built baggage car made of balsa wood for the explosion.
In the distance Butch and Sundance make out trouble coming: a lone locomotive pulling a taller-than-normal baggage car. This is D&RGW #473 towing another studio-built creation, which today resides at the Museum of the Mountain West in Montrose, CO. #473 is still active at D&SNGR.
The old town where they hide out after the robbery is Grafton Ghost Town in Utah.
In a sepia-toned montage later in the film, we catch a quick glimpse of another steam train. This is a stock footage shot from 1900 of the North Coast Limited led by Northern Pacific #300.
