Bound For Glory (1976)
This Woody Guthrie biopic starring David Carradine has a terrific 1930's dustbowl look and features a wealth of steam train footage.
In one brief scene early on, we catch a double-header with Sierra Railway #34 leading Sierra #28. Both are still owned by the railroad at Railtown 1897 in Jamestown, CA. #34 has sat dormant in the engine house for 40 years but #28 still leads an active life pulling excursion trains in the summer!
Some more great 'bo riding scenes were filmed along the old rail line in Altamont Pass (west of Stockton, CA), with diesel engines pulling the long line of freight cars.
The scene where the double-header (#34 & #28) pulls into the railyard is right in front of the depot in Jamestown. That appears to be the rear of Caboose #4 (now at Niles Canyon Ry).
The scene continues as the non-ticketed passengers are given the boot. Sierra Railway #3 makes an appearance on the turntable at Railtown's roundhouse. These steel coaches are the ones still in use for the excursion railroad.
Later in the film it's McCloud River Railroad #25's turn to shine. Today this engine is owned by Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad in Garibaldi, OR and is frequently used in summer excursions to Rockaway Beach.
Late in the film, we get another quick glimpse of McCloud #25 (renumbered to #257) in a freight yard.
