Bite the Bullet (1975)
Bite the Bullet (1975)
This film about a 700-mile horse race starring Gene Hackman & Candice Bergen features some terrific shots of the Cumbres & Toltec, especially engine #483. #487 was also used for the production as well.
Opening shots show the race promotion train led by Engine #483 entering a tunnel work site. The train consists of: "Horse Car" #181 (which looks like a converted RPO car), boxcar #1505, a flatcar, boxcar #0369 and the Hinman Coach (which was paneled with wood & repainted). This was filmed at Mud Tunnel (36°59'14.5"N, 106°16'53.2"W).
Next we see the train making its way around Tanglefoot Curve at Cumbres Pass.

One last great shot of Engine #483, posing at the top of Cumbres Pass. This engine (from 1925) has retired from active service and today is receiving a cosmetic restoration by C&T.
The train makes a stop at the top of Cumbres Pass to pick up Miss Jones (Bergen). Passing by just on the right edge of frame I believe is Engine #487, which is currently still in operation.

We are introduced to Luke (James Coburn) as he awaits the train at Lobato Siding. Here he encounters Carbo (Jan-Michael Vincent). This depot and water tower were built specifically for the film Shootout and left behind for future productions. All that remains today are the cattle pens and water tower prop that was built for Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade.

The train rolls along and we run into Mister (Ben Johnson) at the Cresco water tower.
GPS Coordinates: 36°59'53.3"N, 106°29'28.1"W
Later we see Sam (Hackman) at the same spot.
The festivities begin as the train arrives in the Chama yard. The engine house becomes a wild party. The double-spouted water tower on the north end of the yard can be seen later at night.

And they're off! As the steam whistle blows, the riders head off past the old coaling tower in Chama.
As the race begins, we see the riders out in the open on a dirt road alongside the tracks. This was shot just outside Antonito, and would be used again in Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade.
The bridge where the photographer gets off his motorcycle is El Coda Ditch (37°03'32.2"N, 106°01'53.0"W).
The wood bridge that Sam is seen riding under is a few miles further west.
GPS Coordinates: 37°01'28.0"N, 106°05'05.0"W
We don't see the train again for a while until we get a shot of it passing by a high-elevation curve, while the riders are in the desert.
They finally catch up to the train again at the Chama depot, where Luke dances with a local woman.
This scene appears to be at the Los Pinos water tank. We catch a decent glimpse of the Hinman Coach, which today resides at Georgetown Loop Railroad.

A later nighttime scene takes place at the Cumbres Section House at the top of Cumbres Pass. Miss Jones can be seen riding off into the snowshed. Sam, despite being poisoned, stumbles after her.
The Mexican (Mario Arteaga) is seen crossing Lobato Trestle (36°57'18.3"N 106°32'27.4"W).
Miss Jones passes through Mud Tunnel and helps her convict boyfriend escape the chain gang on the south side.
The Mexican is the first on the scene, then Sam and the train follow.
Suddenly it turns into an all-out pursuit as everyone joins in.
The race finally comes to an end back in the Chama yard, with a rusty collection of derelict engines and stock cars in the background. Engine #489 is currently under restoration by C&T.
