This film starring Matthew Broderick is based on the play about a group of soldiers enduring boot camp during WWII. 

The train travel montage scenes were filmed on the defunct New Georgia Railroad excursion line, with the Savannah & Atlanta #750. Today, the engine is on display at the Southern Railway Museum in Duluth, GA.
