The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again (1979)
The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again (1979)
Tim Conway and Don Knotts return for more antics in the wild west.
Scenes in town were filmed at the former western town set at Disney's Golden Oak Ranch in Newhall, CA. In 2008, this set was demolished and the area was redeveloped into a newer modern downtown street set.
The Kanab Movie Fort in Kanab, Utah was the Army outpost. This set was built for westerns beginning in the early 1950s. This film's fire sequence got out of control and ended up burning down much of the set, which was never used again. Remains of the set still exist on what is now private property.
The old Sierra RR passenger depot in Jamestown can be seen in this shot of Sierra's famous #3 at the station. Sometime shortly after filming (1978), this historic 1897 building burned to the ground (what is it with this movie?). Today, Railtown 1897 State Park operates trains from the old freight depot (the platform of which can be seen on the far right).
It would appear that scenes inside the passenger coach were filmed inside Sierra's historic Coach #2.
We are treated to some great shots of the train underway. Behind Sierra #3 we can see: Virginia & Truckee Baggage/Mail #21, Sierra Coaches #2 & 6, a boxcar and Sierra Caboose #4.
Jeff (Tim Matheson - or rather, his stunt double) makes a jump onto the boxcar in front of Caboose #4. This caboose (former Pickering Lumber #4) was later purchased by Niles Canyon Railway and fully restored.
Millie (Elyssa Davalos) waits for Jeff on the front of Coach #6 as he leaps onto Coach #2.
We follow Jeff as he makes his way up to Baggage/Mail #21, being used as an Army supply car. In the late 1980s this was sold off to the State of NV and is currently in Carson City awaiting restoration.
During the ensuing chase, we get some great rarely-seen closeup shots of Coach #2. Today this car is in storage (not public display) at Railtown 1897.
Soon the train is raided by Indians, working with Lt. Ravencroft (Robert Pine) and Big Mac (Jack Elam).
We also briefly get a peek inside Coach #6. Today this coach is in storage in the roundhouse at Jamestown, which can be seen on a guided tour.
A standoff ensues outside the Baggage/Mail car as Theodore (Knotts) gets involved.
