A River Runs Through It (1992)
A River Runs Through It (1992)
This Robert Redford-directed adaptation of the novel tells the story of two brothers coming of age in Montana.
Early on, we catch Norman (Craig Sheffer) shipping off to college on a Northern Pacific train in Missoula. This is actually the old NPRR depot in Bozeman, MT (which still stands abandoned at 720 Front Street) and the train is being headed by Great Western RR #75, a 2-8-0 Baldwin in 1907. After retirement, the engine was sold into private ownership for movie and excursion work. In 1999, it was sold again to Heber Valley RR in Utah, along with the 4 of the coaches seen in this film (now HVRR Baggage Cars #7503 & 7504 and Coaches #7508 & 7510). Today the engine is undergoing a rebuild.
This film features some beautiful scenery & cinematagraphy and the train scenes are no exception. These scenes were filmed on Bozeman Pass, west of Livingston, MT.
Back at the Bozeman depot again for two scenes of Neal (Stephen Shellen) arriving and departing.
One harrowing scene late in the film occurs when Jessie (Emily Lloyd) decides to take a detour on the train tracks across two bridges and through a tunnel. These were filmed on Eagle Nest Tunnel in Sixteen Mile Canyon north of Bozeman. This old Milwaukee Road grade has been abandoned but is in a fairly remote and inaccessible area.
