Initiative for Multilingual Studies

at Georgetown University

Transforming the world through research into multilingualism across the perspectives of linguistics, the humanities, education, and neuroscience

The Initiative for Multilingual Studies (IMS) is a collaborative effort among faculty and students across different departments and programs at Georgetown University.

The IMS supports its members in the design, funding, conduct, and communication of research about:

  • the benefits of multilingualism in neurocognitive, academic, economic, personal, social, and geopolitical domains
  • the misunderstanding and mismanagement of multilingualism, particularly in vulnerable communities, such as immigrants, Indigenous peoples, regional minorities, and marginalized groups such as Deaf and LGBTQI+ communities
