The University of Greenwich Maths Centre, in conjunction with The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), is very pleased to announce the tenth Undergraduate Mathematics Conference Tomorrow's Mathematicians Today (TMT), which will be held online on Saturday 11  and Sunday 12 March 2023.   There will also be an in-person reception at the University of Greenwich on the evening of Friday 10 March for those delegates who are able to attend: details will be sent when you register.  There is no charge for UK mathematics undergraduates to  attend the conference.

"Everyone was welcoming and friendly, it didn't feel stressful to present,  it was really enjoyable. Saw an amazing selection of talks on all sorts of mathematics. I was inspired by my peers doing research and amazing maths” - delegate at TMT 2022.

(13 March 2023) The conference took place over the last two days.  There was general agreement that the quality of the student papers was outstanding, and there were two very special keynote talks.  The IMA Prize for the best presentation at TMT 2023 was awarded to Maria Esteban Casadevall, Heriot-Watt University, for her talk An introduction to machine learning in the Hyperbolic space.  (The shortlist can be seen on the Prizes page.)  The IMA Popular Vote Prize was awarded to Veronica Bitonti, University College London, for her talk Intellectual Challenges: Algorithms and Undecidable Problems in Group Theory.  This prize was decided by a poll amongst all delegates at the end of the conference.

We link to recordings of some of the presentations from the Programme page, and we have uploaded some images from the event (with permission from delegates who appear in the photographs).

NEWS! (12 June 2023) The IMA's magazine Mathematics Today has published a report on TMT 2023 in the June issue.  The report can also be read online.

NEWS! (26 February 2023)  The provisional programme for the conference has now been published on the Programme page.

The abstracts for the papers to be presented at TMT2023 are now available on the Abstracts page, where you can download the book of abstracts.

The deadline for submitting abstracts has now passed.  We are delighted by the number, quality and variety of papers proposed.

We are thrilled that the keynote speakers at TMT2023 will be Professor Edward Frenkel and Professor Sarah Hart.   Professor Frenkel is a professor of mathematics at University of California, Berkeley and author of the international bestseller Love and MathHis website also includes many videos and writings.  Professor Hart  is Gresham Professor of Geometry and Professor of Mathematics at Birkbeck University of London, and is also President of the British Society for the History of Mathematics. Her book Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections Between Mathematics and Literature  will be published by Macmillan early in 2023.

Professor Frenkel will deliver the keynote talk on Saturday 11 March and Professor Hart on Sunday 12 March.  Further information (including abstracts and biographies) can be found on the Keynotes page.

This will be a fascinating event which will give participants the opportunity to learn about a wide range of mathematics which has excited their peers. The aim of the conference is to enable final year (and other) undergraduates to give presentations on mathematical topics of their choice. Previous conferences have seen undergraduate speakers from a wide range of universities including Aberdeen, Birkbeck University of London, Cambridge, Exeter, Glasgow, Greenwich, Leeds, Liverpool, London Met, Oxford, Portsmouth, Royal Holloway, Sheffield, St Andrews, Warwick and many others.

Mathematics students will benefit enormously in a number of ways by attending. Those going into research will gain experience of the process of conference submission, while those going into the workplace will gain valuable experience of professional practice and networking to enhance their CVs and career prospects. Speakers will additionally gain evidence of their professional skills. All delegates will gain insights into a wide range of mathematics of potential value in their future careers. It will be a wonderfully enjoyable day of inspiring mathematics.

The IMA magazine Mathematics Today published a report on TMT 2022 in the June 2022 issue.  The report on TMT2021 appeared in the June 2021 issue and with kind permission from Mathematics Today this report is available here.
