Splitting for non-stationary Maxwell equations with absorbing boundary conditions

We propose an isogeometric discretization of the non-stationary (time domain) Maxwell equations with absorbing boundary conditions based on splitting of the curl operator. In the case of constant material coefficients (electric permittivity and magnetic permeability), using tensor product basis functions we obtain a system of equations with a matrix that possesses a Kronecker product structure that allows us to solve it in linear time using the Alternating Direction Solver (ADS). We also present an extension of ADS that allows material coefficients to vary at the cost of accuracy by averaging material coefficients over the supports of the test functions. Our goal is to simulate the influence of a source of electromagnetic radiation (antenna, e.g. a mobile phone) on a human head. We present some preliminary numerical results.
