Common name: awagatake-sumire (アワガタケスミレ, 粟ヶ岳菫 [meaning: Mt. Awagatake viola])
Description: Plants ca. 10-20cm tall. Flowers pale purple, flowering in May. Perennial plants.
Distributional Range: Native Asia-Temperate EASTERN ASIA: Japan [Honshu]
Habitat: grows on mountane forest edge, on sunny rocky terrain, rocky graves, and landslides
Note: It is similar to Nagahashi violet (Viola rostrata ), but the leaves are heart-shaped, the veins are conspicuous, and the base truncated. The flower is smaller than Nagahashi violet and is purplish red to pale purple.
