Distributional Range: Native Australasia AUSTRALIA: Australia [New South Wales, Victoria]; Tasmania
Habitat: Found on Kangaroo Island, Mount Lofty Ranges and the lower South-east in South Australia, growing in moist and shady areas. Also found in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. However, Victorian plants previously assigned to Viola sieberiana are now referable to V. hederacea subsp. seppeltiana, V. fuscoviolacea or V. cleistogamoides. Creeping perennial, forming rosettes at nodes; leaves gray-green; flowers pale mauve to white. Eucalyptus fastigiata- E. fraxinoides forest: frequent in disturbed soil of track. Mostly at low altitude but to ca 900 m on the Mt William Range.
Taxonomic notes: The placement of Viola sieberiana as a subspecies of V. hederacea by Adams in the Flora of Australia is not supported by cytological, morphological or biochemical evidence
Sieberiana named after Franz Wilhelm Sieber (1789-1844), a Bohemian botanist and collector who traveled to Europe, the Middle East, South Africa and Australia.
