Not all floors are perfectly level, which is why you might need to adjust the hinges to level the doors and also achieve consistent spaces between the doors. IKEA's hinges have three screws that control the height, depth, and width by loosening or tightening them.

Maybe I am I am missing some instructions. My 98" Pax Fevick doors came with 2 soft close hinges (with grey, plastic insert) and 2 standard hinges. Do the soft close hinges go at the top and bottom and in the middle?

We installed ikea cabinets in 2009. 11 years later, they are definitely showing their age. The insides are fine, the hinges are fine, the wear is just very evident on the doors and drawer fronts themselves. We will probably eventually just replace the fronts. They have not held up to normal use.

I am just writing in to congratulate you on an excellent piece of DIY guidance Edward.

When my wife and I recognised the problem of losing the lowest drawer position on a 1000mm PAX wardrobe with GRIMO doors and KOMPLEMENT wide drawers, I had mumbled that it might involve routing out a groove to clear the lower hinge elbow but almost immediately discounted it as being too difficult.

I then saw your website and managed to complete the job today.

Thanks Edward, yours was a really well explained and presented article.

Btw, is there any way that a pair of Besta unit doors can be used to cover the top part of the frame of a single PAX wardrobe frame, but the bottom part housing the drawers could be left as is, or covered with a separate set of hinged doors from the Besta series??

(There are small cushions attached on the inside which makes it look like the bottom right is not touching the closet, but it is.It's not easy for us to detach the hinges again to verify if the problem is the door itself.)

If you're certain the door is flat, use an accurate ruler to ensure that the mounting holes in the cabinet wall are all the same distance from the front edge of the cabinet. Despite these all being machine made, it's possible for the holes to be misdrilled. I recently purchased & assembled a (non-IKEA) flat-pack armoire and both side panels were incorrectly drilled - the bottom 2 door hinges would mount, but the top ones wouldn't. They sent me replacement sides and all is good now.

It is possible, BTW, to remove the screws for the hinges. With a little care you can install them several times if necessary. The particle board these are made of will get chewed up, but it is doable (again from personal experience). If you determine that the problem is with the door, you should be able to exchange it. Remove the screws from the door since it (and any damaged holes) is going to be returned.

I had the exact same problem with an Ikea Besta door. Turns out that a clear plastic door bumper was wedged inside (portion attached to the door) and prevented the hinge from folding to 90 degrees completely. Always make sure that the hinges are clear of these or screws as they are packaged all together in a plastic bag. Hope this helps someone.

Surface-mount hinges that mount to the front of the cabinet face frame may have some up-and-down adjustment provided by elongated screw holes for the mounting screws. Otherwise, non-adjustable hinges can be moved to reposition the doors. A mark will be left behind in the hinge's old spot. Since the hinge is located on the inside of the door, this won't be so obvious."}},{"@type": "Question","name": "What if there is a gap along the edge of the door that shows the frame?","acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer","text": "The visible gap along any edge of a door or drawer front is called a reveal and this is normal. When you're checking a door for proper alignment, you're usually also checking the reveals, since they form the dark, noticeable lines between cabinet elements. The width of the reveal is your choice, but it's usually limited by the hinge's capacities."}},{"@type": "Question","name": "What if several cabinet doors in a row don't look right?","acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer","text": "Adjusting one cabinet door may throw off the look of an entire row of cabinet doors. You may need to tweak all doors a bit so they work well together and show consistent spacing. This may require a compromise between aligning the outside door edge with the outside of the cabinet and aligning the inside edge with the neighboring door. Stand back a few feet and view the cabinets as a collection. A laser level can help you draw temporary vertical or horizontal lines that run across several cabinet doors at once."}}]}]}] Skip to contentbuttonbuttonVisit The Spruce's homepageĀ  Ā  NewslettersClose search formOpen search formEnter your search termSearch DecorRoom DesignDecoratingDesign StylesSmall SpacesFeng Shui See allĀ  GardenPlants A to ZHouseplantsLandscapingPests & ProblemsWild BirdsIn the Weeds With Plant PeopleThe Spruce Gardening Review Board See allĀ  Home ImprovementSkills & SpecialtiesPaintingKitchenBathroomInterior RemodelExteriorsOutdoor BuildingHome ServicesGreen ImprovementsThe Spruce Home Improvement Review Board See allĀ  CleaningCleaningOrganizingLaundryPest ControlThe Spruce Cleaning Review Board See allĀ  CelebrationsEvents & PartiesEtiquette & AdviceBirthdays See allĀ  What to BuyHow We Test ProductsBeddingFurnitureVacuumsBest GiftsCleaning Products See allĀ  NewsHome TrendsBrands & CollectionsSales & DealsHouse ToursPerspectives"One Thing" Video SeriesIn the Weeds With Plant People See allĀ  About UsEditorial PolicyProduct TestingDiversity & InclusionGardening Review BoardHome Improvement Review BoardCleaning Review Board See all Get daily tips and tricks for making your best home.SubscribeĀ  Ā  About UsNewsletterPress and MediaContact UsEditorial GuidelinesHome ImprovementKitchen Remodel & RepairCabinetsHow to Adjust Cabinet DoorsBy

Refer to your IKEA diagrams as to which predrilled holes you will use when installing your hinges inside the cabinet box. Mark between the hardware holes you will be using to mount the Blum cabinet door hinges to the IKEA cabinet boxes.

They sent me two doors. One has round holes on one side of the back to receive hinges and also a set on the opposite side of the back that appear to be round holes with a part of them sliced off. They also appear to be there to receive the hinges except there are also two small holes next to the large cut-off holes that aren't large enough to fit the "bumps" of the hinges that keeps the hinge in the correct position. The side with the round holes has two holes also and they accept the bumps on the hinge. The other door only has two screw holes one below the other on the top of the back side and another set on the bottom of the back side. I hope someone out there is familiar with Ikea doors and can understand what I mean. Thank you so much for any help. I have searched the internet until my fingers are nubs. No luck with youtube either. Pics attached.

The doors are covered in cladding which not only allows you to extend them but enables you to combine them with other IKEA cupboards (one part of our wardrobe is a Billy cupboard) and create a completely seamless and custom built-in piece of furniture.

You can combine any IKEA furniture for this wardrobe hack as long as it has a door. I would recommend trying to use cupboards that are roughly the same height (like Pax + Billy or Pax + a tall Method cupboard) though as it will make the process easier.

You CAN replace all of your compact cabinet door hinges with these soft close hinges instead. These are used on face frame cabinets like ours that have the extra trim around the front of the cabinet:

Hi, I have a corner cabinet with bi fold doors. Trying to work out how to raise the height of the door that joins to the cabinet. It has special 153Ā  hinges. I have read the instructions and tried to find videos online on how to adjust. It is just the height I'm having trouble with. The instructions say to turn the screw that is in the middle hole (The hole looks like a T shape). Only problem, when the door is open, there is no screw. Need to half close it before there is a screw under it. But then you can't see the screw. And Im not even certain that is the right one. I took the door off and adjusted using that screw, tried full extreme both left and right turn but does not seem to raise the height when put back on cabinet.

There are two reasons why you would need to adjust your cabinet hinges to keep the cabinet doors shut: A) there is an overlap in your cabinet doors, and B) There is a gap between the cabinet door and the closing edge.

Today, most homes have European hinges installed in cabinets that are concealed on the inside of the cabinets. These hinges are easily adjustable. If you feel like the two cabinet doors are overlapping or are edged forward, then you would need to adjust your hinges to fix the overlap.

To fix the alignment of European hinges, you would need to adjust the screw that is the closest to where the cabinet door opens. Use the screwdriver to turn this screw counter-clockwise so that the cabinet door moves away from the side and does not overlap where it closes. 2351a5e196
