It's believed to be the oldest-known message in a bottle, in terms of the amount of time that has passed between when it was written and when it was found. Before this discovery, Guinness World Records said that the oldest was 108 years old, found in Germany in 2015.

Tonya Illman was walking on a sand dune in January when she spotted the old bottle. "I picked it up thinking it might look nice on display in my home," Illman says, according to an account on her husband's website.

"The first thing that caught my eye was the year field, 18__," said Illman's husband, Kym. "It seemed totally unlikely to us that the note and bottle could have lasted that long and then be so easy to find."

"Thousands of bottles were thrown into the world's oceans from German ships, each containing a form on which the captain would write the date it was jettisoned, the exact coordinates at the time, the name of the ship, its home port and travel route," the researchers said. "On the back, it asked the finder to write when and where the bottle had been found and return it, either to the German Naval Observatory in Hamburg or the nearest German Consulate."

The researchers contacted the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, which found that the handwriting on the note exactly corresponds to handwriting in the ship's log. That log indicates that a bottle was thrown from the ship along this route.

The bottle probably arrived on the western shores of Australia within a year of being thrown overboard, the research report stated. There, it is "likely to have spent the majority of its life buried within a layer of damp sand to have remained so well preserved, with a period of recent exposure allowing its fortuitous discovery by the finders."

"This has been the most remarkable event in my life," said Tonya Illman. "To think this bottle has not been touched for nearly 132 years and is in perfect condition, despite the elements, beggars belief. I'm still shaking."

Grieving widower Garret Blake builds boats for a living. Rebuilding his life-that's another matter. But that's before Theresa Osborne comes to his North Carolina village. Theresa, a lonely divorcee and researcher for the Chicago Tribune, knows that Garret is the author of the message she found inside a bottle on a Cape Code beach. And she knows the message spoke to her in away that profoundly touched her heart. Kevin Costner as Garret and Robin Wright Penn as Theresa bring high-voltage starpower to Message in a Bottle, a tale of love lost and found based on Nicholas Sparks' bestseller and directed by Luis Mandoki (White Palace, When a Man Loves a Woman). "You choose-the past or the future. Pick one and stick with it," Garret's spry father Dodge (Paul Newman) advises. The advice sticks. So does the impact of this tender, movingly filmed tale.

A message bottle (originally known as a note in a bottle in Wild World) is an item in Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: New Horizons that can wash up on the beach containing a letter. In Wild World, notes in bottles can be purchased from Tom Nook's store and sent to random players through Tag Mode, and in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, message bottles contain a letter from a villager alongside a DIY recipe.

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, a note in a bottle can be purchased from Tom Nook's store for 200 Bells, and an unlimited amount can be purchased per day. The item is placed with the letters in the player's pockets, and like a letter, a message can be written and an item can be attached. A written note in a bottle can be released at the beach; once one has been released, the player can access Tag Mode from the title screen. While in Tag Mode, the note in a bottle that was sent out can be received by any nearby player who is also in Tag Mode, and vice-versa. Additionally, notes in bottles containing DLC items and messages written by Nintendo were sent out through Tag Mode via a special Game Card in DS Download Stations.

In addition to notes in bottles received through Tag Mode, notes in bottles with pre-written messages can wash ashore at any time. There are a total of 40 pre-written bottle mail messages, many of which are from unseen characters or organizations.

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, an unused note in a bottle item, likely leftover from Wild World, appears in the game and can only be obtained through the use of memory editing. It has no functionality, but it can be sold for 50 Bells.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one to two message bottles wash ashore on the island each day, and they contain a letter from a villager alongside a DIY recipe. Each villager personality has different letters and recipes, which are the same recipes that can be given by villagers in-person.

Message bottles can also appear on Mystery Islands and boat tour islands. After completing the fifth vacation home in Happy Home Paradise, message bottles can appear on the beach on the Paradise Planning island. Message bottles found on some boat tour islands and the Paradise Planning island can contain unique recipes.

Throughout ? Gekijban Doubutsu no Mori, Ai finds several notes in bottles on the beach that tell her to plant cedar trees for the Winter Festival and are implied to be sent from an alien. It is later revealed that Gulliver sent the messages to impress the residents of Animal Village while he masquerades as an alien.

Yet it is about two likable characters--three, really, since Paul Newman not only steals every scene he's in, but puts it in the bank and draws interest on it. Robin Wright Penn plays Theresa, a researcher for the Chicago Tribune, who finds a letter in a bottle. It is a heartbreaking love note to "Catherine,'' by a man who wants to make amends to his true north. Theresa, a divorced mother of one, is deeply touched by the message, and shares it with a columnist named Charlie (Robbie Coltrane), who of course lifts it for a column. Theresa feels betrayed. (If she thinks she can show a letter like that to a guy with a deadline and not read about it in tomorrow's paper, no wonder she's still a researcher.) The column leads to the discovery of two other letters, on the same stationary. Charlie has the bottle, the cork, the stationery and the handwriting analyzed, and figures the messages came from the Carolinas. A few calls to gift shops, and they know who bought the stationery.

Soon it's time for Theresa to return home (where after she writes one column, the paper promotes her and gives her an office with a window view; at that rate, in six weeks she'll be using Col. McCormick's ancestral commode). Of course she wants him to come and see her--to see how she lives. "Will you come and visit me?'' she asks. His reply does not represent the proudest moment of the screenwriter: "You mean, inland?'' Sooner or later, he's going to find out that she found his letter in a bottle and is not simply a beautiful woman who wandered onto his boat. That his secrets are known in those few places where the Tribune is still read. Yes, but it takes a long time, and when his discovery finally comes, the film handles it with a certain tact. It's not just an explosion about betrayal, but more complicated--partly because of the nature of the third letter. (Spoiler: It's a bit of a stretch that Garret's dying wife coincidentally hit on the idea of writing a note in a bottle to him on the same typewriter and stationery he was using, especially since she presumably didn't know about the first two notes.) As morose and contrived as the movie is, it has a certain winsome charm because of the personal warmth of the actors. This is Robin Wright Penn's breakthrough to a different kind of acting, and she has a personal triumph; she's been identified with desperate, hard-as-nails characters, but no more. Costner finds the right note of inarticulate pain; he loves, but doesn't feel he has the right to. Paul Newman handles his role as Costner's ex-drunk father with the relaxed confidence of Michael Jordan shooting free throws in your driveway. It is good to see all three of them on the screen, in whatever combination, and the movie is right to play down the sex scenes and underline the cuddling and the whispers.

I have thrown this bottle into the sea for someone to find another day. Maybe it's travelled down to Africa or up to Iceland! I won't know if someone found this, but I hope it is found!

-Aoife (note writer)

A message in a bottle can make friends out of strangers, lovers out of the lonely, or give the dead a final chance to speak. Messages in bottles prove that people from different backgrounds can get along, if given the chance.

I started Message in a Bottle Hunter in 2011 as a blog where I could share stories of the friendships I have made through real messages in bottles. However, it quickly became something more. People began to write me seeking help with solving messages in bottles they had found. I realized there was a whole community of disconnected people out there, just trying to find each other. Since that realization, this site has served as a hub for message-in-a-bottle finders and senders. be457b7860
