International Indigenous Peoples' Forum on Plastics
The International Indigenous Peoples' Forum on Plastics (IIPFP), formerly known as the "Indigenous Peoples' Caucus", is an independent group of Indigenous experts and representatives focused on upholding and centring Indigenous Peoples in all UN Global Plastics Treaty processes, including negotiations and implementation phases.
Our members have been actively engaged with the UN Global Plastics Treaty since UNEA 5.2. The IIPFP comprises Indigenous representatives from across all 7 UN socio-cultural regions (Africa, Arctic, Asia, North America, Latin America/Caribbean, Pacific, Russia/Eastern Europe) and has been formed through coordinated and structured work between members. This approach has facilitated meaningful and extensive engagement in negotiations.
MISSION & GOALS
• Develop a culturally-safe platform for Indigenous Peoples to participate in UN Global Plastics Treaty processes and collaborate with other Indigenous representatives towards shared strategic goals.
• Centre Indigenous Peoples' rights, sovereignty, self-determination, health, experiences, perspectives, knowledge systems, sciences, and solutions in all UN Global Plastics Treaty processes.
• Ensure that all UN Global Plastics Treaty processes centre and reaffirm commitment to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
• Advocate for just, community-led action and system transformation to address and prevent the harms caused by plastics across their life-cycles, including: exploration for and extraction of raw feedstocks (fossil fuel and otherwise), polymer and chemical production, manufacturing, transportation, distribution, sale, disposal, pollution, and physiological and ecological contamination.
