Mixed Choir Tuljak in Saku, Japan
As a part of the Japanese Saku anniversary celebrations on the 28th of September 2025 Mixed Choir Tuljak led by Illia Humeniuk will have a two-part concert. On a concert will be performed Tormis' two cycles of wedding songs ("Seventeen Estonian Wedding Songs" and "Kihnu Wedding Songs") director of the staged performance is Anne Türnpu.
This concert is a musical journey through national identity and emotional depth. It brings together songs of homeland, nature, love, and unity — rooted in the Estonian choral tradition, while reaching toward my homeland, Ukraine, and the warmly welcoming Japan.
The second half of the program is framed by powerful national symbols: Mu isamaa, mu õnn ja rõõm and Ernesaks’ Mu isamaa on minu arm, joined by Kimi Ga Yo and Bozhe Velykyi Yedynyi. Together, they form a musical call for dignity, love of country, and resilience in challenging times.
Works by Mart Saar, Miina Härma, and Veljo Tormis ground the program in Estonia’s folk heritage and inner strength. In dialogue with these, Japan’s Hana wa saku and Leontovych’s Zore moja vechirniaya open the lens to a global perspective — bridging cultures through beauty and shared belonging.
Contemporary voices like Tõnu Kõrvits and Mari Kalkun add reflections that are both personal and timeless, inviting us to remember the power of empathy, respect, and unity.
More than a tribute to Estonia’s choral legacy, this program is a gesture of connection — to the past, to other nations, and to the future. It is a musical offering of peace, and a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect it.
