A six-day journey exploring who God is

Introduction
In this devotional, we will explore the different facets of God and we will start from the beginning (Genesis). My prayer is that as you read this devotional, you will deepen your knowledge of God and your relationship with Him. I know we can never fully comprehend who God is, but I pray you will learn who God really is to you and I pray the knowledge of Him and His nature will help you understand why He is worthy of our full devotion and praise.
Day I: God is the Creator
Bible Verse: Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
In Genesis 1 verse 1 we are introduced to God as the creator from which everything was created. The verse says – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This verse suggests that nothing existed prior to when God created everything. This verse also lays a foundation for us to understand the nature of God. As the creator, He defines everything and who we are. Everything and everyone is made by God. This demonstrates God’s power, His Wisdom, and His Sovereignty! Imagine purchasing a piece of land which is bare and building a 10-story building on top of it with a pool, a playground, an office, a school, and much more. This is similar to what God did. He created all things out of nothing and did it all BY HIMSELF. He was the architect, the carpenter, the plumber, the engineer, the roofer, the electrician, interior designer, etc. That is definitely one powerful person who has a lot of wisdom, strength, initiative, patience, innovation, and much more. The name of the Lord referred to in Genesis 1 verse 1 is Elohim which means God, Creator, Mighty, and Strong.
The Bible lets us know in Colossians 1:16 – 17 – “For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for creating the world and for creating me. You are a powerful God, and You are eternal. You, being able to create everything demonstrates Your absolute power and sovereignty over all of creation. Please help me to look around and appreciate all Your creations especially me who You fearfully and wonderfully made.
Day II: God is Creative
Bible Verse: Genesis 1:2 - Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
On Day One, we explored God as the Creator. Today, we will focus on God being creative. To be creative according to the Google Dictionary is relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.
The first part of Genesis 1 verse 2 says “Now the earth was formless and empty…” God was able to create so much from a formless and empty earth. It shows how creative God is. He designed everything and was able to determine what each thing would look like and what each thing’s function would be – the sun, the moon, morning vs evening, the plants, the animals, the fish, and of course the best of all creation – Man (Genesis 1: 26 to 27). We can only but marvel at such a creative being who came up with all these things. Psalm 19 verse 1 shares this opinion as well – The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
In this world (according to Google), there are over 7 billion people; there are over 33,000 species of fish, over 5,000 types of mammals, over 900 thousand different kinds of living insects and much more. When I think of all this, I am in awe. One being created all this and all these species of creation have so many intricate details and complex qualities. This represents such fine craftsmanship and artistry beyond our imagination. The Bible says in Ephesians 3:20 – “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,” This verse simply lets us know that God’s ability surpasses anything we can think of or imagine.
We have a creative God and therefore we who are made in His image are also creative. We must remember this as we carry on our daily lives. Each and every one of us has the ability to create and be creative. By creating and being creative, we are reflecting the nature and image of our Father/Creator. Ephesians 3:20 says “…according to the power that is at work within us.” This means we have this power and this ability. His creative nature is also inherent in us.
Prayer: Thank You Lord that I am created in Your image and likeness. I ask that You help me embrace the creativity that You have put in me and use it for Your glory in Jesus Name, Amen.
Day III: God Exists as a Trinity
Bible Verse: Genesis 1 verse 1 & 2 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Trinity means the state of being three. When we refer to God existing as the Trinity, we are referring to God the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. God is three in one. God as God the Father created everything from nothing. He created everything through His Word (the Son) and then Genesis 1 verse 2 mentioned His presence/the Spirit of God hovering over the waters; this refers to God as the Spirit. Each has their own role, but they exist as one. We mentioned the name of God as being Elohim in Day 1 of this devotional. Elohim in Hebrew is actually a plural term which also further supports the existence of the Trinity.
The Trinity is not an easy concept to understand for sure. We should note that the Trinity does not mean we have three Gods or that God is divided into three. Each person in the Trinity is fully 100 percent God. This means the Father is not a third of God; rather He is all the being of God. This is the same for the Son and the same for the Holy Spirit.
The idea of having all three co-exist shows that God is relational and wants us to be in relationship with Him. In addition, being aware of the distinct roles in the Trinity as it relates to us and our salvation gives us a greater appreciation for God and also helps us to be more specific in our prayers. We will dive into further discussion on each party in the Trinity in the next few days.
Prayer: I thank You Father once again for creation and for creating me. I thank You for Jesus who died for me and I thank You Holy Spirit for helping me in my weakness. Amen!
Day IV: God the Father
Bible Verse: Isaiah 64 verse 8 – “Yet O Lord, you are our Father. We are clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
God the Father represents our Creator; the one who made us. Isaiah 64 verse 8 says – “Yet O Lord, you are our Father. We are clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
We also learn in Genesis 2 verse 7 that God formed man from the dust in the ground and breathed into his nostrils.
In the New Testament, we further learn more about God the Father through the lens of Jesus. This makes God as the Father a little bit more relatable. The Bible tells us that God as our Father provides for us and He also cares for us (Matthew 6 verses 25 to 34). The Bible also tells us in Matthew 7 verse 7 to 11 that God as our Father answers us and gives us what we ask for; He gives good gifts to those who ask Him. God as our Father allows us to communicate with Him through prayer. Jesus teaches us how to pray to God, our Father in Matthew 6 verse 9 to 13; it starts with “Our Father in heaven,”. God as our Father loves us. He loves us so much that he sent His only Son to die for our sins.
If you think of an earthly father and all the roles he should play, it will help you understand God as a Father even though He is and does way more than an earthly father. Sometimes the relationship people have with their earthly father is not the best and affects how they relate to God. For those who fall into this category, you have to study God’s nature in the Bible and genuinely pray for God to renew your mind and help you to see Him as a loving Father who has your best interest at heart.
God truly wants to have a good relationship with us. He is mindful of us; knows the quantity of hairs on our head and wants us to be in constant communication with Him.
Prayer: Dear Father, I want to deepen my relationship with you as my Father. Please help me Abba Father to feel the love You have for me and never worry about anything because You are constantly watching over me; in Jesus Name, Amen!
Day V: God the Son
Bible Verse: John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life
God the Son a.k.a. Jesus is God’s spoken word and Jesus signifies Redemption.
John 1 verse 1 says – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Verse 2 – He was in the beginning with God
Verse 3 - All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
John, in these verses, was referring to Jesus. He said Jesus (the Word) was with God and Jesus (the Word) was God. This makes us understand that Jesus was also in existence from the beginning when God created the world, which we read in the book of Genesis. He spoke the Word and everything came into existence. John 1 verse 3 lets us know that it was through Him (Jesus/the Word) that all things were made.
Of the three in one, Jesus was the only one who we experienced in physical form. The Bible mentions in Colossians 1 verse 15 to 17 that Jesus is the image of the invisible God and all things were made through Him.
To make this concept a bit more practical, think about when you want something. We have to first birth the idea in our minds. No one can see what our thoughts are or our ideas because they are in our mind; our thoughts are not physical, but they exist. To make that transition of our thoughts/ideas to become physical or visible, we have to say something or speak the idea/thought into existence. Our brain communicates with our mouth and the words come out – Spoken Word. As the words leave our mouths, it goes into the physical and does what it’s supposed to do. This is similar to how God the Father worked with God the Son to bring all things into creation.
Jesus also signifies Redemption. John 3 verse 16 lets us know that God loved us so much that He gave His only Son and that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life.
Through Jesus, we receive life and light. The Bible says in John 14 - I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Jesus’ life also brings light into the world. The Bible says in John 8 verse 12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
With Jesus in our lives, we will be like a city set on a hill and no one can ever cover our light; darkness is forever driven away.
Prayer: Dear God, help me receive the light of Jesus. I pray my light will shine for all to see so that all may see my good deeds and glorify You in Jesus Name, Amen.
Day VI: God the Holy Spirit
Bible Verse: John 14:16 & 17- And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you
Genesis 1 verse 2 mentions “the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” This is our first introduction into God the Holy Spirit. We learn here that God the Father and God the Son were not alone; the Holy Spirit was also present.
The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God who lives inside of us. He is the mind of God that leads us to the truth. He constantly tries to speak to us; He is in our thoughts and encourages us to do the right thing. Whenever we need to decide on something or make choices, He is always there to help us.
God wants to speak with us on a regular basis and He does this through the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, it might sound like thoughts in your head or maybe you may see a picture, or you might even have a dream. It takes some practice, prayer, and meditation to get used to hearing from God and deciphering His voice.
When Jesus’ time on earth was nearly over, He promised we would not be alone and He would send a Helper - the Holy Spirit. John 14 verse 16 to 17 says And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – The Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, or he lives with you and will be in you”.
The Holy Spirit is indeed an always available Helper. Once a person accepts Jesus into his/her life, the Holy Spirit is also invited into that life and begins to provide guidance and support. Rely on Him; it is not possible to live a holy life without Him.
My prayer is that we all have a better understanding of who God is and how impactful He can be in our lives. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all (2 Corinthians 13: 14).
