Introduction
The Power of your Words
Wow, I can't believe it’s a new year already. If you are reading this devotional, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you into the new year. As we begin the new year, it is important to remember the power of our words and the impact they can have on our lives and the lives of those around us. Our words have the power to bring life or death, to hurt or heal, to create our reality, to influence and persuade others, to build up or tear down, to bless or curse, and to glorify God. Throughout this 7-day devotional, we will examine the power of our words and how we can use them to bring life, encouragement, and glory to God. Let's start the new year off by being mindful of the power of our words and using them to bring positivity and blessing to those around us.
Day 1: The Power of your Tongue
Scripture References: Proverbs 18:21 ESV, Psalm 141:3 ESV
Proverbs 18:21 ESV "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits."
Psalm 141:3 ESV "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!"
One of the smallest organs in the human body is the tongue. But as small as the tongue is, it is one of the strongest organs in the body. The tongue has the ability to bring life or death, to build up or tear down, and to bless or curse. This year, It’s important for us to be mindful of the power of our tongue and to choose to speak words that bring life and positivity. The Psalmist writes in Psalm 141 verse 3 ESV “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips”. We must set a guard over our mouth and choose our words wisely, rather than letting our tongue lead us down a path of destruction.
As you lean into this year, make a conscious effort to choose your words wisely and speak words that bring life and positivity. Set a guard over your mouth and seek to use your tongue for good, rather than letting it lead you down a path of destruction.
Prayer: God, help me to be mindful of the power of my tongue. May I choose my words wisely and speak words that bring life and positivity. Set a guard over my mouth and help me to use my tongue for good, rather than letting it lead me down a path of destruction. Amen.
Day 2: Words Have Consequences
Scripture References: Proverbs 12:18 ESV, James 3:5 ESV.
Proverbs 12:18 ESV "There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."
James 3:5 ESV "So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!"
Welcome to Day 2 of our devotional, today we will focus on the consequences of our words. We often underestimate the power of our words and the impact they can have. As we go through this year, it's important to be mindful of the words we speak and the impact they can have on ourselves and others. Rash or careless words can cause deep wounds and hurt, while wise and thoughtful words can bring healing and restoration. It's crucial that we consider the consequences of our words before speaking.
Today, be mindful of the words you speak and the impact they may have on yourself and others. Seek to build others up with your words, rather than tearing them down. Be aware of the consequences of your words and choose to speak words that bring life and healing.
Prayer: God, help me to be mindful of the power of my words and the consequences they can have. May my words bring healing and restoration to myself and others, rather than causing harm. Help me to speak words of love and grace. Amen.
Day 3: Our words have the power to create our reality
Scripture References: Proverbs 18:20 ESV, Job 27:4 ESV
Proverbs 18:20 ESV "From the fruit of a man's mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips."
Job 27:4 ESV "My lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit."
Welcome to Day 3 of our devotional, our focus today is on the power of our words to create. When we read the Bible, our first introduction to God is that He creates. And not only does He create, He uses his words to create. God made you and I in His image which tells us that you and I also have the power to create with our words. The words we speak have the power to shape our reality and create our future. When we speak words of truth and integrity, we create a foundation of trust and respect. But when we speak words of deceit and falsehood, we create a reality of mistrust and chaos. It is important to be mindful of the power of our words and choose to speak the truth.
Today, choose to speak words of truth and integrity. Be mindful of the power of your words to create your reality and seek to build a foundation of trust and respect with your words. Speak into existence the things you want to see in your life this year.
Prayer: God, help me to be mindful of the power of my words to create my reality. May I speak words of truth and integrity, building a foundation of trust and respect. Help me to guard my tongue and choose to speak words that honor You and bring life to those around me. Amen.
Day 4: The Power of Your Words in Prayer
Scripture Reference: Mark 11:24 ESV, James 5:16 ESV
Mark 11:24 ESV "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
James 5:16 “ESV Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working”
Welcome to Day 4 of our devotional, I am glad you have made it this far. One of our greatest tools as believers is our prayer. So today our focus will be on the words we use in prayer. When we pray, our words have the power to shape our requests and bring them to life. It's important to be mindful of the words we use in prayer and to speak with faith and confidence, believing that our prayers will be answered.
Today, choose your words carefully when praying and speak with faith and confidence. Believe that your prayers will be answered and watch as God brings them to life.
Prayer: Dear God, help me to be mindful of the power of my words in prayer. May I speak with faith and confidence, believing that You will answer my prayers. Help me to trust in Your power to bring my requests to life. Amen.
Day 5: Words Have the Power to Influence Others
Scripture References: Psalm 19:14, Colossians 4:6
Psalm 19:14 "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer."
Colossians 4:6 "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person."
Welcome to Day 5 of our devotional on the power of your words. Today our focus is on how our words can influence others. Growing up there was a saying that I was fond of, “do as I say, not as I do”. When I think about the words we speak, we have the power to use our words to influence and persuade others, either for good or for bad. It is important to choose our words wisely and speak with grace and truth, rather than using our words to manipulate or deceive.
One of the goals for you this year should be to seek to use your words to influence others for good. Choose your words wisely and speak with grace and truth, rather than using your words to manipulate or deceive.
Prayer: God, help me to use my words to influence others for good. May my words be seasoned with grace and truth, rather than being used to deceive or manipulate. Help me to choose my words wisely and speak with Your love and wisdom. Amen.
Day 6: The Power of a Gentle Response
Scripture References: Proverbs 11:9 ESV, Proverbs 15:1 ESV
Proverbs 11:9 ESV "With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered."
Proverbs 15:1 ESV "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."
Welcome to day 6 of our devotional. Today our focus is on the power of a gentle response. When we are faced with anger or conflict, it can be tempting to respond with harsh words and escalate the situation. But Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that a gentle response can turn away wrath and diffuse the conflict. It's important to be mindful of the power of our words in times of conflict and choose to respond with gentleness and kindness.
As you go about your day today, practice responding to conflicts with a gentle and kind response. Instead of reacting with harsh words, seek to turn away wrath and diffuse the situation with kindness and understanding.
Prayer: God, help me to be mindful of the power of my words in times of conflict. May I respond with gentleness and kindness, rather than escalating the situation with harsh words. Help me to turn away wrath and bring peace to conflicts that come my way. Amen.
Day 7: The Power of Praising God with Our Words
Scripture References: Psalm 34:1 ESV, Psalm 147:1 ESV
Psalm 34:1 ESV "I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth."
Psalm 147:1 ESV "Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting."
Welcome to Day 7 of our devotional. Today we will focus on the power we have with our words to praise God. One of the greatest privileges we have as believers is having something we can give God, which is our praise. Your praise to God has a unique identifier that no one can duplicate. It is important to use our words to praise and honor God. When we speak words of praise and thanksgiving, we lift up God's name and bring glory to Him. It is a joy and a privilege to use our words to praise and honor our heavenly Father.
Today, as we conclude our 7 day devotional, make a conscious effort to use your words to praise and honor God. Whether it's singing a worship song or simply thanking God for His blessings, let your words be a source of praise and honor to Him.
Prayer: God, thank you for the opportunity to use my words to praise and honor You. May my words be a source of praise and thanksgiving to You, lifting up Your name and bringing You glory. Help me to use my words to bring joy and honor to Your name. Amen.
