Introduction
Purpose is the driving force that enables a person to accomplish their God given dreams and aspirations. To understand your purpose, you must first step back and ask yourself these questions…What are my passions? What are my gifts? How can my talents and gifts be used to accomplish my purpose?
The journey to finding your purpose can sometimes be rocky and challenging. However, the secret is to never give up! The bible is filled with stories of people who faced great adversity but kept pushing through to victory.
This 5-day devotional is a thought-provoking series that will help you understand your purpose, and maximize your God given gifts and talents.
Day 1. Purpose revealed through Pain
“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17, KJV).
Joseph was a young man destined for greatness. His purpose was revealed to him multiple times through dreams during his early years. However, we went through great pain and trials on his journey to finding purpose. His brother sold him into slavery, Potiphar’s wife lied against him and he was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. Yet, in the midst of it all, Joseph never lost sight of his purpose. He was resilient and he found avenues to help others around him. God had his hand on Joseph and at the right time, the manifestation of that which was promised came to pass.
In life, you may face challenges and adversities. Just like Joseph, people may laugh at your ideas, downplay your dreams or even lie against you, but the secret is to never give up! The bible says in Romans 8 verse 28 that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (New King James Version). My prayer for you today is that every challenge, trail and tribulation will work together for your good. You will look back 10 years from now and see how the pain was part of process that ultimately led you to your purpose.
Prayer:
Dear Father, I thank you for your hand upon my life. I know that you have created me for a unique purpose. Lord, please help me to trust you and to never give up on your promises. I declare that all things are working together for my good and I will walk in the fullness of my purpose. This I pray, in Jesus Name. Amen!
Day 2. Purpose maintained through Purity
“Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank” (Daniel 1:8, KJV).
Daniel was an outstanding young man. He was in a foreign land (Babylon) and at that time, the king of Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar) was looking for wise men to join his cabinet of advisors. The bible states that Daniel was found to be ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers (Daniel 1 vs. 20, NKJV). One unique thing that stands out in this story is that Daniel was not influenced by Babylonian culture. Although he was surrounded by affluence, he chose to honor God and walk in integrity while serving at the King’s palace.
As a Christian, it is important to walk in purity of heart, mind and body. Remember that you are an ambassador for Christ. You are not to conform the culture and norms of this world. Rather, you have been called to be salt and light to the world. I pray that you will shine your light today and seek to honor God in all you do.
Prayer:
Dear God, I thank you for the gifts and talents that you have placed inside of me. I declare that I will represent Christ with honor, and I will walk in integrity when I sit before kings and princes. May I always bring you glory in all I do. Thank you for lifting me higher in Jesus Name. Amen.
Day 3. Purpose smeared by Pride
“Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right, and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.” (Daniel 4:37, NIV).
The bible is filled with stories of kings who allowed pride to fill their hearts and cloud their reasoning. King Nebuchadnezzar was a prime example. He said to himself, "is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might and of my power, and for the honor of my majesty? (Daniel 4:30, KJV). This statement was made out of pride and it grieved the Lord. Following this, Nebuchadnezzar was sent away from his people for seven years until he repented and was restored. He then gave thanks to God and acknowledged Him as the sovereign king.
In life, always remember that it is not by your power or might that you are able to accomplish great things. Rather, it is God's spirit that enables you. Learn to acknowledge God in all you do and never allow pride to fill your heart. Always make the conscious decision to return the praise and glory back to God.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank you because it is by your grace that I am here today. It is not by my power or my might. Lord, help me to have a humble heart especially in seasons of blessings and abundance. This I pray, in Jesus Name. Amen!
Day 4. Purpose fueled by Passion
“David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” (1 Samuel 17:45, NIV)
The story of David and Goliath is one of bravery and courage. David was just a young lad when he encountered Goliath. However, he was fueled with so much passion that he did not consider the size of the giant neither was he intimidated by his threats.
One striking thing about David was the way he spoke to Goliath with such power and authority. David was fueled by his trust in God and his reliance on God’s power at work in him. In fact, if the battle was based on strength alone, Goliath would have won, but because God was with David, he won the battle and fulfilled his mission.
Just like David, you can also trust in the power of God to help you win the battles of life. The bible says in 1 Samuel 2 verse 9, “it is not by strength that one prevails” (New International Version). Learn to commit your ways to the Lord, ask him to guide and direct you, and you will begin to see God fight for you and grant you victory in all you do.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, I declare that my strength comes from you! I will not trust in my abilities alone, but rather, I will rely on your power to help me win the battles of life. You are the power at work in me and I will always trust you to grant me victory over every adversity. This is pray, in Jesus Name, Amen!
Day 5. Purpose Fulfilled
“Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose, I came to this hour. (John 12:27b, NKJV).
Jesus came down from heaven to fulfill the ultimate purpose of redeeming the world. During his 33 years on earth, he was purpose driven! He spent the first 30 years of his life preparing for this great assignment. During the last 3 years leading up to his death on the cross, he touched many lives with his teachings and performed countless miracles.
In the same way, God has a unique purpose, that is tailor made, just for you. From the moment you were formed in your mother’s womb, he had a special assignment prepared for you! You are not an accident. You were not just created to exist for a few years and exit the earth. God want you to leave a mark on the world. You can become a change agent for Christ.
Today, let this revelation become your reality. God loves you dearly and he wants to use you for his glory. Everything that has ever happened to you and anything that will ever happen to you is all part of God’s perfect plan. Go forth and shine your light!
Prayer:
Dear Father, thank you for sending Jesus to die for me on the cross of Calvary. Thank you for giving me a unique purpose. Today, I choose to trust in your word to guide me into the fulfilment of my unique purpose. The purpose you have ordained for me. This I pray, in Jesus Name, Amen.
