This 5-day devotional will prepare us on how to effectively resist the enemy's attacks and experience victory in Christ.
by Gbenga Ajakaye.
Introduction
Soldiers prepare for war through intensive training and preparation. Their training often includes but is not limited to physical conditioning to build strength and endurance, specialized training to develop tactical skills and weapon proficiency, and studying the enemy's tactics while refining their own defensive and offensive techniques. They cultivate mental resilience and discipline, fostering focus, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to the mission. Additionally, soldiers ensure their equipment is well-prepared and easily accessible. Overall, a soldier's preparation for war encompasses physical, mental, and strategic readiness, equipping them to face the challenges of battle confidently and effectively. We have seen a recent example in how Russia approached their war with Ukraine. The lack of preparedness of the Russian army in Ukraine highlighted several significant issues. Firstly, it exposed shortcomings in their strategic planning and intelligence gathering, as they underestimated the resistance and determination of the Ukrainian forces. Secondly, it revealed deficiencies in their logistical capabilities and coordination, as they encountered difficulties in effectively sustaining their troops and advancing their operations. The war in Ukraine was supposed to be quick and easy, but it ended up lasting for over a year. The Russian army, once feared and powerful, now looked weak because they weren't adequately prepared for war!
Just like in physical battles, we as believers can not be careless or underestimate any spiritual battle, whether it is significant or small. Spiritual Warfare involves practicing spiritual disciplines like prayer, studying God's Word, and cultivating a deep relationship with Him. It requires developing discernment to recognize the enemy's tactics and standing firm in faith. Equipping oneself with the armor of God, including truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and the Word of God, is essential. This preparation strengthens spiritual endurance, enhances understanding of the enemy's strategies, and relies on God's power and guidance. Through this readiness, we can effectively resist the enemy's attacks and experience victory in Christ.
Day 1: Putting on the Armor of God
Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-11
As believers, we are engaged in a spiritual battle that requires us to be prepared and equipped. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:10-11 to "be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." This armor is not physical, but spiritual, designed to protect us against the attacks of the enemy. Putting on the armor of God involves understanding and utilizing the various components of this divine protection: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. Each piece serves a specific purpose and plays a vital role in our spiritual warfare. Through the armor of God, we are empowered to stand firm and resist the enemy's tactics.
Questions to think over:
In what areas of your life do you need to rely on God's strength rather than your own?
How can you actively incorporate truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God in your daily spiritual battle?
Are there any specific schemes of the enemy that you need to be aware of and guard against?
Prayer
Everlasting Father, thank you for equipping me with Your armor. Help me to continually put it on and rely on Your strength in the midst of spiritual battles. Guide me in applying the truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation found in Your Word. Grant me discernment to recognize the enemy's schemes and the wisdom to overcome them. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Day 2: The Power of Prayer
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 10:3-4
A few months ago, our kids suddenly started getting sick, one after the other. One of them had to take two weeks off from school, but it turned into a longer stay at the hospital. Everything seemed to be going wrong. The demands of work and school became less important as my wife and I shifted our focus on our children's recovery. Prayer should have come naturally in such a situation, but it didn't. I couldn't find the words, but my spirit continued to pray. I held onto God's promises and kept praying despite the challenges we faced.
In the realm of spiritual warfare, prayer is one of our most powerful weapons. It is through prayer that we communicate and align ourselves with the mighty power of God. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 10:3-4, "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds." Through prayer, we tap into the divine power that can break strongholds and overcome the enemy's tactics. Prayer not only connects us to God's power but also transforms us from within. It aligns our hearts and minds with God's will, enabling us to discern the enemy's strategies and resist his temptations. Moreover, prayer fosters intimacy with God, nurturing our relationship with Him and deepening our trust in His guidance and protection. In the face of spiritual battles, let us be diligent in prayer, knowing that God is faithful to hear and answer.
Questions to think over:
How would you describe the role of prayer in your life and spiritual warfare?
Are there any hindrances or distractions that prevent you from maintaining a consistent prayer life? How can you overcome them?
In what ways can you deepen your intimacy with God through prayer, seeking His guidance and protection in the midst of spiritual battles?
Prayer
Gracious God, I acknowledge the power of prayer in my spiritual warfare. Teach me to pray according to your will and to rely on your divine power. Forgive me for any negligence or distractions that have hindered and continue to hinder my prayer life. Help me to cultivate a consistent and fervent prayer life, deepening my intimacy with you. I invite your guidance and protection in every battle I face. Thank you for the assurance that you hear and answer my prayers. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Day 3: Standing on God's Promises
Scripture: 2 Peter 1:3-4
In the midst of spiritual warfare, it is essential to anchor ourselves in the promises of God. The Bible declares in 2 Peter 1:3-4, "His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these, he has given us his very great and precious promises." God's promises are not mere words; they are powerful and reliable, offering us strength, hope, and victory in the face of the enemy's attacks. To stand on God's promises, we must first immerse ourselves in His Word, for it is the foundation upon which our faith is built. By meditating on Scripture, we discover the promises of God that pertain to our specific battles. As we internalize these promises, they become an unwavering source of encouragement and assurance, enabling us to withstand the enemy's assaults. Let us hold fast to God's promises, declaring them in faith and trusting in His faithfulness.
Questions to think over:
What are some specific promises of God that have brought you comfort and strength during spiritual battles?
How can you deepen your knowledge and understanding of God's Word to discover more promises relevant to your current struggles?
In what ways can you actively incorporate God's promises into your prayers and declarations, strengthening your faith and confidence in Him?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I am grateful for the precious promises You have given me in Your Word. Open my eyes to new revelations and deeper understanding of Your promises as I study and meditate on Scripture. Help me to anchor my faith in Your promises, declaring them in times of spiritual warfare. May Your promises be a constant source of strength, hope, and victory in my life. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Day 4: Overcoming Fear and DoubtÂ
Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:7
Returning to school many years after completing my bachelor's degree was a challenging experience. My initial Master's program class, focused on linear algebra, felt like a foreign language. I struggled with self-doubt and questioned if going back to school was the right decision. However, I held onto the promises of God as written in 2 Corinthians 12:9. The verse reassured me that God's grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness. This verse resonated with me, reminding me that God's grace and power are more than enough to support and empower me through the doubts and difficulties I encountered in my first class.
Fear and doubt are common weapons the enemy uses to weaken our resolve and hinder our progress in spiritual warfare. However, as believers, we have been empowered by God to overcome these debilitating emotions. The apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we possess the strength, love, and clarity of mind to combat fear and doubt. Overcoming fear and doubt requires intentional action on our part. We must actively renew our minds with God's truth, filling our thoughts with His promises and casting aside the lies and deceptions of the enemy. Additionally, cultivating a deep relationship with God and relying on His love and power enables us to face spiritual battles with confidence and courage. Let us reject fear and doubt, embracing the power and love that God has lavishly bestowed upon us.
Questions to think over:
Identify some areas in your life where fear and doubt have hindered your spiritual progress. How can you combat these negative emotions with the truth of God's Word?
How can you cultivate a deeper understanding of God's love and power in order to overcome fear and doubt?
Are there any specific strategies or practices you can implement to strengthen your faith and confidence in God, especially during times of intense spiritual warfare?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess that fear and doubt have often hindered my progress in spiritual warfare. I thank You for the power, love, and sound mind that you have bestowed upon me. Help me to renew my mind daily with Your truth, casting aside the lies and deceptions of the enemy. Strengthen my understanding of Your love and power, that I may face spiritual battles with confidence and courage. Grant me wisdom to recognize and reject fear and doubt, replacing them with faith and trust in You. May Your Spirit empower me to overcome every obstacle that stands in the way of my spiritual growth. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Day 5: Walking in Victory
Scripture: 1 John 5:4
As followers of Christ engaged in spiritual warfare, we can find confidence in the assurance of victory. The Apostle John declares in 1 John 5:4, "For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." Through our faith in Jesus Christ, we have the power to conquer the forces of darkness and emerge victorious in every spiritual battle we face. Walking in victory requires a steadfast commitment to our faith and a deep reliance on the power of God. It involves trusting in His promises, obeying His commands, and surrendering ourselves completely to His will. As we align our lives with God's purposes, we can walk confidently, knowing that the victory has already been secured through Jesus' finished work on the cross. Let us live each day in the reality of our victorious position in Christ, boldly proclaiming His name and advancing His kingdom.
Questions to think over:
How does the assurance of victory through faith in Christ impact your approach to spiritual warfare?
Are there areas in your life where you have not fully surrendered to God's will, hindering your experience of victory? How can you surrender those areas to Him today?
In what practical ways can you boldly proclaim the victory of Christ in your words, actions, and prayers?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the assurance of victory that I have through faith in Jesus Christ. Help me to walk in the reality of this victory, trusting in Your power and relying on Your promises. Show me any areas in my life where I have not fully surrendered to Your will, and grant me the strength to surrender them completely. Fill me with boldness to proclaim Your victory in every aspect of my life, advancing Your kingdom and bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus' victorious name, I pray. Amen.
