IFC HEALTH PROJECTS TRACKER 🔎

A database with all the International Finance Corporation's health-related projects since 2017.

This database provides an organised and comprehensive overview of all health-related projects in which the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC) is involved as an investor or advisor since 2017.

The database includes the project name and number, budget, summary, the IFC's role, and the region of implementation. It is possible to filter the categories to locate specific information.

We aim to continuously update the database. However, we recommend that users pay attention to the "Last updated" date on the sheet's header.

The database was created independently by Wemos and is not an official publication of the IFC. All the information was retrieved from the IFC Project Information & Data Portal.

The database is available for free download. Move the cursor over the sheet, select "Open Spreadsheet" at the gray box, and save a copy to your own Google Drive.

DATABASE - IFC HEALTH PROJECTS

IFC HEALTH PROJECTS - FEB 09, 2023

NOTES

"Classification": we identified 5 main categories of investment in health.

"Sector": sector of the investment according to the IFC's database. While these are all health-related projects, they might not always fall into the same sector. Eg. while many projects fall into the "Medical and Diagnostic Services" sector, others might fall into the "SME Finance Sector", or in the "Equity Fund" sector, or a few other sectors.

"Blended finance": according to the OECD, blended finance is “the strategic use of development finance for the mobilisation of additional finance towards sustainable development in developing countries.” This section identifies how the IFC mobilised additional private investment in each specific project.

NOTE ON INVESTMENTS THROUGH INTERMEDIARY FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS

This database does not capture all IFC health investments through intermediary financial institutions (see here). The IFC Project Information and Data Portal does not fully disclose these investments. In addition, the information available does not specify the projects in which intermediaries invest. Since many intermediaries invest in multiple sectors, it is not possible to track their health investments through the IFC database.

About the IFC Health Projects Tracker 🔎

The civil society should be able to monitor multilateral institutions' investments, particularly in the health sector. Health is everyone's most valuable asset - yet, private healthcare financing does not always contribute to Universal Health Coverage.

While the IFC discloses all its investments in its online database "Project Information & Data Portal", it is not always easy to find health-related investments. For instance, many health projects are not classified under the "Medical and Diagnostic Services" sector.

This is why Wemos has conducted extensive work within the IFC database to track all health-related projects since 2017. This resulted in the creation of the IFC Health Projects Tracker, which provides a public repository for all the information gathered in an organised and accessible format.
