Current Activities

Overview:

The Standards Committee holds numerous standards activities throughout the year, mostly associated with Working Group meetings.

Working Group meetings are usually held at intervals of 6 to 8 weeks, via WebEX conferencing or other online conferencing systems to accommodate members from multiple geographical regions. Face to face Working Group meetings are also held during the main IES conferences coinciding with AdCom meetings, notably at ISIE and IECON conferences. Face to face meetings will include online conferencing to accommodate members unable to physically attend.

Standards Technical Committee meetings are held twice a year, normally coinciding with IES AdCom meetings at ISIE and IECON conferences. TC status reports are usually covered at these meetings plus new activities discussion.

Ongoing Activities:

The Standards Committee is currently sponsoring the following standards development activities:

  1. IEEE P21451-002 PAR. Recommended Practice for Low Power Smart Transducers Applications.

    • Co-sponsored with the Instrumentation and Measurements Society (IMS)

    • SCOPE: This recommended practice establishes operating aspects and additional Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) based on the IEEE 1451 family of standards for low-power smart sensors and actuators, concerning the signal conditioning electronics and the processing unit operation. The recommended practice also defines protocols for accessing TEDS and smart transducer data with restrictions on energy, battery power, and energy harvested from the environment. Operating aspects and protocol implementation should adhere to computational restrictions of low-power smart transducers, available memory, or execution speed.

  2. IEEE P2668 PAR. Standard for Maturity Index of Internet-of-things: Evaluation, Grading and Ranking

    • SCOPE: Ethernet The scope of this standard is to measure the maturity of objects in Internet-of-Things (IoT) environment, namely IoT objects. IoT objects shall represent things or devices or the entire system. The standard defines the mechanism and specifications for evaluation, grading and ranking of the performance of IoT objects by using indicator values, referred as IoT Index (IDex). IDex shall classify the objects into multiple levels of performance and give a quantitative representation and indication of the performance of objects. IDex shall manifest guidance on blending of IoT objects to evolve into better performance.

  3. IEEE P1451.1.6 PAR. Standard for a Smart Transducer Interface for Sensors, Actuators, and Devices - Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) for Networked Device Communication

    • Co-sponsored with the Instrument and Measurements Society (IMS)

    • SCOPE: This standard defines a method for transporting IEEE 1451 messages over a network using Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) to establish a light-weight, simplified protocol structure to handle IEEE 1451 communications. The standard uses the common network services defined in IEEE 21451-1.

  4. IEEE P2805.1 PAR. Self-Management Protocols for Edge Computing Node.

    • SCOPE: This standard specifies the self-management protocols for edge computing node. These requirements include management protocols of Self-organization, self-configuration, self-recovery and self-discovery between multiple edge computing nodes. The autonomic management features for edge computing node shall cover discovery, node identification, negotiation, transport, messaging and security mechanisms.

  5. IEEE P2805.2 PAR. Data acquisition, Filtering and buffering Protocols for Edge Computing Node.

    • SCOPE: This standard specifies the protocols used by the edge computing node of buffering, filtering and pre-processing data collected from controllers including programmable logic controllers, computer numerical controllers (CNC) and industrial robots. The data acquisition from field devices with different interfaces must be automatically stored, filtered and calculated according to reconfigurable rules (including buffering data from selected time frame, convert data format and filter invalid data) from industrial clouds and other edge computing nodes.

  6. IEEE P2805.3 PAR. Cloud-Edge Collaboration Protocols for Machine Learning.

    • SCOPE: This standard specifies the collaboration protocols of enabling machine learning on the edge computing node with support from industrial clouds. This standard provides implementation reference of machine learning upon lower powered, cheaper, embedded devices, a specific hardware-based method of accepting the introduced machine learning models and then online optimization, i.e. comparing the models with incoming live data.

  7. IEEE P2023 PAR. Standard for Digital Transformation Architecture and Framework.

    • This is an Entity PAR

    • SCOPE: This standard provides an architecture and framework for digital transformation development, usage, implementation and interfaces for applications. The architecture and framework addresses scalability, systems and interfaces, security and privacy challenges for digital transformation applications.
