The IELTS Academic and General Training Reading tests are graded on the same scale. The Academic Reading test may contain texts which feature more difficult vocabulary or greater complexity of style. It is usual that a greater number of questions must be answered correctly on a General Training Reading test to secure a given band score.

Here are the average number of marks scored at different levels of the IELTS scale in Academic Reading, and General Training Reading sections. The precise number of marks needed to achieve these band scores will vary slightly from test version to test version.

All IELTS scores are between 0 and 9. You can also get .5 scores as well (for example, 6.5 or 7.5). You will get a band score for each skill (listening, reading, writing and speaking) and also an overall band score. The overall band score is the average score of all the skills. See the table below as an example.

As explained on the IELTS website, overall test results are calculated to the nearest 0.5 or nearest whole band score. This means if the final score is not a precise 7.5 (as shown in the table above), your score is pushed to the nearest whole score or half score depending which is nearest. Below you can see examples of how this works according to IELTS:

The Academic and General IELTS tests have different reading sections. However, the question types, the number of questions, and the way it is scored remains the same. The question types range from multiple choice and matching information tasks, such as matching sentence endings or headings, to completion tasks such as summary, flow-chart or sentence completion.

The IELTS Reading band score charts that are displayed illustrate the average number of marks needed to get each band score. As a result of the variations in texts used on different occasions, actual scores may differ slightly between tests.

So, I got my IELTS results: AVG-7.5: S-8, L-8.5, R-7, W-7. I did the computerized exam with the British Counsel (outside of the UK).

A reading score of 7 means I made about 10 mistakes in all four parts: there is no way this is true. I know this is not a measure, but I just flawlessly scrolled through the Reading part during the exam and even had a spare 10 minutes at the end to check my answers.

TOEFL iBT section scores give you even more insight into your applicant's abilities and can help you see whether a test taker demonstrated the skills that are most important to your program or institution.

ETS does not recommend using these tables as the only resource to set cut scores. The TOEFL program provides the Guidelines for Setting Useful Score Requirements for the TOEFL iBT Test (PDF) to help institutions set useful and relevant score requirements.

The mapping of TOEFL iBT scores and CEFR levels is based on an initial standard-setting exercise with educators, and subsequent analyses of test scores to address feedback from universities and teachers of English about the levels of performance in an academic setting.

The TOEFL iBT test provides the highest measurement precision at language-proficiency levels B2 and C1, which are typical requirements for admissions in higher-education institutions. Test takers with very high scores are likely to be able to perform at CEFR level C2.

Institutions can accept both the TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Essentials tests for the same purposes, including university admissions. To make sure your score requirements are aligned, visit Setting Score Requirements for TOEFL Essentials.

With TOEFL Steps, you can see the relationship between CEFR levels and the reading and listening scores from all tests in the TOEFL Family of Assessments, including the TOEFL iBT test. It provides a guiding tool for showing student progression and readiness for the next test.

IELTS Reading evaluates a variety of reading skills, and while the question patterns are the same, the text styles for Academic and General Training change. You will have 60 minutes to answer 40 questions and read three main reading texts. The IELTS reading test is meant to evaluate your general reading abilities. The abilities tested in this test are listed below.

Learn to scan and skim: These reading strategies make use of rapid eye movement and keywords to allow you to move quickly through text. Skimming is the process of reading quickly to acquire a general understanding of the subject. Here's a quick rundown:

Increase your reading speed: To perform well on your IELTS reading test, you must develop a consistent reading habit. This will improve your reading abilities. Reading native writers' books, blogs, or articles will improve your reading stamina, vocabulary, and speed. This reading habit will not only improve your reading ability but will also broaden your understanding of a variety of topics. If you intend to take an academic reading test, you should focus more on reading academic-related books and articles. Here's a simple overview to increase your reading speed:

Recognize the many sorts of reading questions: In the academic test, the reading section contains 14 different sorts of questions, while the general reading section contains 13 different types of questions. You must have a thorough comprehension of each question type and how to respond to them. If you are having trouble answering any of the questions, you should spend extra time practising the specific question type. Remember that each question requires a different form of response, such as a text, number, phrase, or letter. Thus, while preparing for the question type, be aware of the type of answer each question requires.

Management of time: The reading segment has a time limit of 60 minutes. You have one hour to finish the 40 questions in the three sections. As a result, you have 20 minutes to answer each section. These 20 minutes can be divided into 16-17 minutes for reading the passage and answering the questions, followed by 3-4 minutes for transferring the answer to the response sheet. Make certain that you are not devoting too much time to any one question or part. If you are unable to answer a question, skip it for the time being and return to it later.

Keep awareness when moving responses to the answer sheet: There will be no specific time allocated for transferring your answers in the reading portion, therefore it must be finished within the 60-minute time limit. As a result, you must set aside some time to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. You must be careful to indicate the proper response to the question while transferring the answer because individuals tend to miss it under pressure. As a result, while studying for the IELTS, you should practise transferring responses.

Leave no questions unanswered: Try to answer all of the questions in the reading portions. If you are unable to locate an answer to a question, you may respond with the closest plausible answer. The choice elimination strategy will be useful in answering problems with multiple-choice answers. Even if you don't know the answer, attempt to fill in the blanks using the information in the passage. If it is correct, you will receive marks; if it is incorrect, you will not receive marks because there are no negative marks in the reading portion.

Expand your vocabulary: Answering the reading questions requires a broad vocabulary because synonyms and paraphrases are frequently utilised. To enhance your vocabulary, follow the read, note, and revise rule. This means that when you encounter a new term, you must consider its meaning, spelling, synonyms, and antonyms. Then you must keep a written record of the word for future reference. Revise the notes on a daily basis until you are comfortable with the word. Some reading questions will need you to write replies, match sentences, or complete the summary. In these circumstances, you must ensure that the sentences are grammatically correct and have proper sentence structure. e24fc04721
