ICWSM 2021 is hosting the second ICWSM data challenge to bring together researchers from across disciplines to solve society-relevant problems together as a community. This will be enabled by fostering collaboration and exchange of ideas in a structured setting. This year’s data challenge theme is Cross-platform analysis. While connecting to others and sharing opinions online, people use a number of social platforms. As such, ideas are not constrained to single online social networks, but rather flow on multiple ones. Sometimes, ideas and movements start on a community and later spread to others. Other times, different communities discuss the same topics in completely different ways. Yet, the research community has a limited understanding of the cross-platform dynamics of information sharing, and of how these influence online discourse. To begin filling this gap, we invite papers exploring novel and thought-provoking approaches to answer research questions by looking at multiple platforms.
For this challenge, we ask authors to take two datasets of their choice, selected from the ones released as ICWSM Dataset Papers between 2018 and 2020. You can find a list of these papers here. The two dataset should be used to answer one or more research questions. There is no restriction to the type of analysis to be performed (i.e., qualitative or quantitative) and to the type of research questions to be investigated. Examples of potential topics include looking at how the same news story (e.g., a political election) was discussed on two platforms or comparing hateful speech on multiple platforms.
ICWSM data challenge is a fully virtual event taking place on June 7th, 2021 in conjunction with ICWSM 2021, Atlanta, USA. Challenge participants will have the opportunity to present their work and discuss with other workshop participants at the workshop.
