The Society of Modern Grammar (SMOG)’s International Conference on Syntax and Semantics at GyeongKuk National University (ICSS@GKNU) is an annual conference bringing together generative linguists from East Asia and around the world to present and discuss current research related to generative syntax and its interfaces. As well as regular presentations, each year SMOG’s ICSS@GKNU invites plenary and invited speakers to deliver a series of lectures on the conference theme. The 3rd ICSS@GKNU hosted by SMOG will take place at GyeongKuk National University in Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea, from August 18 - 20, 2026. The conference will be supported by the Glocal University Promotion Team at GKNU.
The general session of ICSS@GKNU will feature a plenary and an invited lecture by Dr. Norvin Richards (MIT, USA) and Dr. Yoichi Miyamoto (Osaka University, Japan). The theme of the 3rd ICSS@GKNU is “Cycles in Human Language Computation”. More specific topics relating to the conference theme include the definition of cycles, Merge (internal versus external Merge), (anti-)locality, the definition of workspace, the duality of semantics, the A-/A' distinction, the role of economy conditions, the Strong Minimalist Thesis, and its application including grammar instruction. However, equal consideration will be given to papers from all areas of generative grammar. Applicants for oral/poster presentations must submit their abstracts by May 31, 2026.

Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per author, or two joint abstracts per author. Please indicate whether the submitted work is proposed for an oral/regular presentation, a poster, or either. Abstracts must be submitted no later than May 31, 2026.
