1 Preparatory Meeting + 1 Intro lecture on Marian iconography + 4 Practical Painting Sessions

1. Preparatory Meeting:

Preliminary organizational meeting in Zoom. We will discuss the list of materials to be purchased in your local art store. The prospective participants will receive hands-on instructions on working with Trello online platform and access to pre-recorded video instructions on icon painting.

2. Intro lecture: Image of the Virgin with the Child: History and Theological Significance (prof. Taras Tymo)

The Practical Painting Workshop will start 7 days after the preparatory meeting

(to allow the students time for purchasing the materials)

3. Painting Workshop - 1

• Presentation on technology of reverse glass icons

• Preparation of the glass and materials

• Drawing – transferring the sketch onto the glass.

4. Painting Workshop - 2

• Painting lights and shadows

• Application of the main colors

5. Painting Workshop - 3

• Completion of coloring

• Coloring the face and giving a blush

• Gilding

6. Painting Workshop - 4

• Sum-up meeting

Price:

$160 USD for the full package of learning materials without the guidance of an instructor; if a need arises, then the value of one online consultation with an instructor is $25

$220 for the full package of learning materials and 5 sessions in a small group of up to 10 persons with an instructor

$250 for the full package of learning materials and 5 individual sessions with an instructor

20% of tuition will go to the charitable needs of the victims of the war

The Phenomenon of Reverse Glass Iconography

The reverse glass icon is a remarkable phenomenon of generally European, and specifically Ukrainian, folk art. It impresses modern people with its simplicity, richness, and harmony of colors. This type of iconography reflects both Christian iconographic tradition and the soul of the people – simple and sincere piety and a sense of beauty.

We invite you to join us in a journey through the art of the traditional Ukrainian reverse glass icon. We will be using the painting techniques of the original 19 century icon “Virgin with the Child”. This icon belongs to the reverse glass icons collection of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine.
