Inaugurated at VIT

The second edition of the International Conference on International Conference on Innovations in the Teaching of English Language and Literature (ICITELL 2019) was inaugurated at VIT Vellore on 16 August 2019.

The two-day Conference, organized by the School of Social Sciences & Languages, was inaugurated at a function presided by the Chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan, with Dr. Binoy Barman, Executive Editor, DIU Journal of FHSS, Daffodil International University, Bangladesh, as the Chief Guest. Seven international experts on English Language Teaching from Bangladesh, Sultanate of Oman and Malaysia will enlighten the participants on the latest trends and techniques in the field of language teaching. 475 participants from 11 states of India and 3 international participants from Bangladesh and Syria have registered for the event. The Conference has been organized to help the participants share their research findings. Workshops and hands-on sessions have also been organized as part of the conference for the benefit of the participants. Selected papers will be published in a Scopus indexed journal.

In his Presidential address, Dr. Viswanathan emphasized the importance of English language in the globalized world to communicate with people of different countries and cultures. He mentioned that 44 languages are spoken in the VIT campuses by students from all the states of India and from 55 countries. He mentioned that India was truly multi linguistic society, with more than 120 languages spoken in 1900 dialects. Dr. Viswanthan said that language and religion played significant roles in the partition of India. English language, he said, was a great unifying force in the Indian context. He recalled Jawaharlal Nehru’s view that English language was the window to the world of opportunities, and also recollected the words of Dr. S Radhakrishan that English Language was essential to bring in modern ideas to our society. Dr Viswanathan emphasized that the English language, in addition to enabling effective communication, was quintessential for the sharing of new knowledge in the fields of Science and Technology. Though India has won independence from the British, the legacy of the English language lives on and flourishes well in the Indian subcontinent, he said.

The Chief Guest Dr. Binoy Barman, stressed the importance of English language in the modern age of Information and Communication Technologies and in the globalized context. He urged the students and teachers to adopt modern teaching-learning strategies to master the language. Dr Barman was in awe for VIT’s organizational skills and technological capabilities. He exhorted VIT to conduct tripartite conferences inviting experts from different parts of the world to share their expertise and experiences in teaching and learning English.

The Chancellor honoured the international experts and released the Conference proceedings in the presence of the Registrar, Dr K Sathiyanarayanan. Dr. Sarika Gupta, Head of the Department of English welcomed the gathering. Dr. G Velmurugan, Dean, SSL offered felicitations.
