Due to the social distancing being practiced to prevent the spread of COVID-19 many people have taken to working from home or participating in online learning. Because much time is spent at home it can be difficult to get back into the routine of things and to stay productive rather than procrastinating your work. In light of this, here are six tips to help you to still be productive and maintain on top of things when you're working/studying from home.
Create a schedule. Making a schedule will help you stay productive and stay on track. Try to plan your day the night before, this will help you know what needs to be done and you can get started right away. When making your to do list it may be helpful to also write down the amount of time you will be dedicating to that particular task. I recommend creating a pre and post work routine as well, including separating your time for downtime, exercise, and room for creative outlets. This will help you to not overwork yourself as your setting time to take care of yourself mentally and physically. Another helpful piece of advice is knowing how to effectively set up your morning routine. Attempt setting an alarm to wake up, so that you won´t oversleep and allow yourself more time in the day to complete your assignments. Once you wake up make your bed, so that when it's time for bed you have a clean space to go to. This also allows you to get active in the morning, encouraging productivity. Don´t forget to eat breakfast as it is the most important meal of the day and lastly try taking a cold shower in the morning, it will help keep away the drowsiness.
Have a dedicated workspace. I highly recommend not setting up your workspace in your bedroom. When your workspace is near your bed it makes it easier for you to procrastinate because at any moment you can hop on over to your bed and take a nap. Not that naps are bad, but a 15 minute nap can easily turn into a 2 hour nap. By having a dedicated workspace your mind is able to be more productive as it associates that area as a place to do work. However, you are working from home so feel free to decorate this space as you wish. Make sure that when you are at this workspace you set rules and strong boundaries to prevent yourself from being distracted or others distracting you.
Stay away from your phone. One important rule that you can set when you're working is to stay away from your phone if it isn't essential to your job/class. If you find it difficult to not be on your phone when it is near you, I would suggest keeping it in another room while you work. By staying away from your phone, you´re eliminating the distraction of mindlessly scrolling through social media for hours. However, when you're stuck on a task, you can phone a friend for help. The key here is to try to spend as much time away from your phone as possible, but if you must use it then do so in moderation.
Take regular breaks. Within your schedule make sure you take frequent brain breaks. Like I said before, it is important that you do not overwork yourself, you´re working from home after all. After every hour of work that you do I recommend taking a 15-20 minute break. Also try to take good quality breaks, meaning don't take this time to go through Instagram, instead use this time to do small chores or practice meditation for example.
Have structured meals, including snacks. Make sure you have a dedicated lunch break set up in your schedule. By skipping lunch you're prone to overworking. However, it also isn't expected for you to do work for 5 hours straight afterwards. A snack is encouraged here and there. It is important though that you make sure your snacks are healthy as it's easy to binge eat junk food. For example, some snack options are having a pack of almonds or eating fruit. This also prevents the harmful effects that sugar and junk food can have on your system.
At the end of your day take time to relax. My last tip is to work/study the times you normally would at your job or at school. For example if you go to school from 7:30 to 2:30, then make sure you stop your work at 2:30 rather than continuing late into the night. You're working from home, so make sure that you give yourself the rest of this time to relax, spend time with family, and simply have fun at home. I hope you found these tips as helpful as they are for me. Stay safe everyone!
