Ms. Russo- science

Fifth Grade Science - School Closure Work

Hello Parents and Scholars!

As most may already know, Ms. Russo is out on maternity leave. I, Ms. Francies, have been with your children this week and I will continue to work with them during the 14-day school closure and beyond until Ms. Russo returns.

Below I've attached all the assignments we'll be working on during these two weeks. If you can, please print the sheets out. If not possible, please have your scholars use their own sheet of paper to answer all questions, write all notes, and/or copy the images on the sheets.

I will be available on Webex for virtual instruction time Monday through Friday between

Thank you,

Ms. Francies

5th Grade Curriculum Map

Use this as a guide to what concepts will be covered each unit. Lengths of units will change as needed.

August- Brandon Lightfoot

Respectful, Responsible, Ready to Learn Student of the Month

Scientist of the Month

Each month, scholars will research a specified scientist. They will work throughout the month to gather information about the scientist at home. Using the information they find, they will create a 5 paragraph informational essay showcasing the Scientist of the Month.

(p.s. the QR code can be scanned ;)

August- Albert Einstein

September- Isaac Newton

October- Marie Curie

Unit 1: Earth and Changes Over Time

In this unit, scholars will learn about constructive and destructive processes. They will obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about different surface features on Earth (valleys, deltas, etc.) and determine what type of process created the feature. Scholars will participate in hands on SNAPs Labs to model surface features (SNAPs- Science Skills, Narrative, Assessment, and Problem Solving). They will obtain information about different the different types of technology we use to help predict and limit the impacts/effects of constructive and destructive processes.

Unit 1 Resources

Slow and Rapid Change PP

This is the power point we will use in class. All unit notes and vocabulary will come from. Each week we will cover 2-3 chapters (depending on time). Have scholars review information to stay current with unit topics.

Unit 2: Dynamics of Classification

In this unit, scholars will break down the concept of taxonomy. They will think like scientists and learn how to use scientific classification procedures to classify animals and plants of different groups. Scholars will end the classification section by creating and classifying their own animals. During part 2 of this unit scholars will focus on Heredity. They will learn about genes and traits that are inherited from their parents. They will have an understanding as to why they look more like their mom or their dad, etc. Scholars will end this part of the unit with a genetics survey project.
