Reading/ELA

Ms. Rogers 2019-2020

Hello! I am Ms. Rogers and I will be teaching ELA and Reading this school year. This is my 2nd year at IAS and i'm excited for the changes that we are making. Unlike the other subjects, all of the standards that we will cover in ELA will be continual. There will be certain stories that will focus more on one topic than others, however all of the standards will always be present. I have provided the GADOE curriculum map only as a guide. More specific coverage will provided on a bi-weekly basis. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Boom Writer

Please read the document with the instructions on how to log in to Boom Writer. We will be writing a book collaboratively and it is important that each scholar participates fully. At the end of this process, you will be able to purchase a soft-cover book should you so choose.

Dear Parents...

With an unprecedented health crisis among us, your Global Academy team is working diligently to ensure that learning and instruction continues. Please make note of the the URL's for the websites to the left of this message. Your children will use these sites to complete assignments while we are working remotely.

A questionnaire about access to technology was sent at the beginning of the week in the hopes to prepare us for the probability of homeschooling. In the event that you are unable to access the online content, the Reader's Notebook and Close Reader were sent home with your scholar.

Classwork 3/30 and 4/13 (There is no school 4/6 due to spring break)

  • Finish chapters 2 and 3 on Boomwriter.com
  • Each chapter must be at least 200 words, no more than 500.
  • Once complete, submit for revisions.
  • Once all scholars have turned in chapters 2 and 3 we will vote and move on to the next chapter.

Our Standards

When it comes to ELA, our standards are cyclical, they will repeat over and over. With each story, or task, I will highlight a few standards that will become our "focus standards". Please see below for the Unit 2 "focus standards".

ELAGSE5RL4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.

ELAGSE5RL1: Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text

ELAGSE5RF3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. a. Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multi-syllabic words in context and out of context

ELAGSE5W2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. a. Introduce a topic clearly, provide a general observation and focus, and group related information logically; include formatting (e.g., headings), illustrations, and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension. b. Develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples related to the topic.
