Maddie McGarvey: It started because I really loved art, but I was a terrible painter. I was a terrible illustrator. I couldn’t do art at all. But I wanted to do something creative. I don’t have a great, “My grandfather handed me his camera when I was three years old and I never looked back” type story. I was simply a lost teenager who didn’t really know what she wanted to do. Didn’t really have her thing. But in college I decided to major in photojournalism. And that was big for me. It opened me up to how versatile this job, and this art form, can be. Realizing that you can meet people, document these intimate moments in their lives—and then, say, at a news event, you can be at the forefront of everything that’s happening. Capturing history in real time. So I started that way, and I really can’t picture doing anything else at this point.

MM: There wasn’t one big break. It was ten years of being persistent. People think you become an overnight success, but you become an overnight success over ten years of grinding. I got out of college and didn’t know what I wanted to do. Didn’t know where I wanted to go. Didn’t know what my next step was. I was a bit aimless, but eventually got a job at a small newspaper in Vermont. So I moved there. I didn’t know anyone, and thus was a bit miserable. Plus it was a horrible job. They had me photographing five assignments a day, while also writing and doing video. So I cut my teeth there, for better or worse.

So there are hardships, of course. And there are bad shoots. But it’s also a job that introduces me to so many different, wonderful people. It’s a job that’s different every single time I do it. Tonight I’ll be taking photos of the President. Next week I’ll be on assignment covering something completely different. So I’m thankful for that. The variety. And I am so thankful for the relationships. What a joy. People trust me to portray them and to tell their story. And that’s a really special thing. I never want to take that for granted.

ABBY: Purely the fact that our history is confusing is not a good thing [laughs]. I think people like to attach themselves to a region—like New York hardcore, or this band is “from Long Island.” There’s a feeling of ownership there when a region is attached to a band. So it’s probably not a good thing to be scattered [the way we are] because it’s confusing. A lot of people think we’re from Chicago, but while Josh and Ridge both lived in Chicago, we’re definitely not from Chicago. Although we did put Chicago on the EP cover, and that’s confusing, so that’s our own fault [laughs]. But more than that, I think there would be a stronger sense of unity [in the band] if we were all in one area. I love everyone in Life’s Question, and it would be awesome to just hang out, but we don’t even get to do that on a normal life basis.

But we’ve had to grow and understand the dynamic of having me and Ridge in the band. Like, if the band is disagreeing about something and Ridge and I feel the same way about a decision—which is not always the case—but I think we try to be cautious of making our other band members feel like we are some type of unit that’s gonna bulldoze somebody else’s opinion. I don’t want it to feel that way. I think we’ve probably done that in the past, so I try to be more cautious about that now and more mature in handling these decisions. But I love being in a band with Ridge and I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way.

ABBY: The idea of me singing felt normal because I had singing parts in my old band. We always knew this was an option. “Cracks in the Floor of Heaven,” that was an early-on song, and we loved how it came out. We kind of felt like my singing part was a bit of a moment and we wanted to create more moments like that. I think the full-length [2022’s World Full Of…] was more of a Ridge and Nick project for the most part; it was just how the album was written. They had the time, so they really took the lead there. But with this EP, we tried to go back to being more collaborative, and I think we all wanted me to sing more. I think Life’s Question as a whole, we just want to get weird with it and be creative and just be able to express ourselves.

Grim history aside this is a beautiful part of the world! Very interested to read about your travels there as we were also there recently in May. We stayed in Mainz and took the boat up to Bacharach (had lunch in a pub) and then stopped off at Bingen for tea before taking the last boat back to our base in Mainz. A few years ago we stayed in Koblenz for a few days and went down the river the other way also to Bacharach for lunch at the castle there overlooking the Rhine from the hilltop. Just love the medieval towns, castles, vineyards and beautiful scenery ?

We are going to Germany in May and have 9 days, starting in Cologne and ending in Munich. I'm having some trouble with the middle of the itinerary because everything sounds like "can't miss" and it's a bit overwhelming. We want to hit Cologne, the Black Forest, and Munich; outside of that, we're a bit unsure. Basically days 3 - 6 are up in the air with the idea to hit the Rhine, maybe see castles, and spend some time in the Black Forest. I tend to overpack an itinerary and love to keep moving, but I'd rather slow this trip down.

"Day 4: open day, but thinking by the end of the night we want to be in Offenburg to take the Black Forest Train line the next day. Is this a good starting point/place to stay overnight?"

Laura,

Thank you for the advice. I will do that. I had heard that Krakw is a lovely city, and I was thinking it would be fun to take an overnight train. But you are correct that it really isn't in the neighborhood. I needed a sanity check.

Ms. Jo,

I will also do this. Thank you. When I read that someone was doing a day trip from Bacharach to Cologne, I began to think that maybe these towns are all quite close together and that we didn't need travel days. But I'm sure there are other things to do and see along the way.

While I certainly agree that Neuschwanstein is a faux castle, I can't really ignore it, so I stole a day from later in the trip and have added a day to Bacharach. I had already seen the Marksburg website (probably from another of your postings to someone else's question, Russ), and it had pushed me over the brink (I was already considering it). And the terrace next to Rheinfels looks lovely, although perhaps a little chilly for April. We'll also check out the wine museum. Thank you again.

Gideon Grae Rhine or Gideon "The Great" Gideon "The Gift", Good Gidz, Giddy, Gidz, and on some days when he had every right to be Grumpy Gidz. Regardless of which nicknames that you knew him by over his life it all began at a 4am wake up from God who gave his name to me. Gideon's name means valiant warrior and that he was. Gideon was born into a family that loves him more than words can express. So much love that it had to be shared. We knew this boy was meant for more than just us. That his purpose would reach far and wide. Gideon loved us all right back. He had a great family at Mott's. He would light up a room with his smile and big brown eyes. One of the ways he loved to be comforted was with his "loving gaze", he would just stare into everyone eyes and lock you in. He wanted to know you and wanted you to know him. Gideon loved music and chatting and lots of physical touch. Gideon had a whole team but definitely had a few that will always hold a special place. Gideon was born into his Daddy's arm where he took his first breaths and passed away in his Daddy's arm taking his last, surrounded by his people. We felt called to share Gideon's life with you and sharing all the way God was showing up amidst all the hard. He was in it and still is. I know we had big plans for Gideon to meet so many of you here on earth, but if you knew Gideon you know he always had his very own plan. So just as Gideon entered heaven and received a whole new heart, we believe that so much of his purpose was to draw you closer to him but ultimately draw you closer to God, giving you a chance at a brand-new heart. Gideon will be deeply missed by many. But we can live in hope that one day we will all finally get to meet our sweet Gideon with his new heart in heaven. In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you take a moment to hug your child, grandchild, friend, or walk in the woods for a moment, an hour, or a day. Time waits for no one.

Ms. BERGQUIST: Yeah. Some people write love songs about what happens in the beginning of a relationship. We've sort of moved on to what happens during the bulk of that relationship, the work, the investment, the commitment, you know? And, you know, some of it doesn't really sound all that sexy. It's like condensing a novel into, you know, six minutes and, you know, our history together, our partnership. So I was trying to cover a lot of dynamic range in the short span of six minutes.

I wouldn't necessarily give up on Scenic because of Trier. Although it appears that Charming Castles and Vineyards of the Rhine & Moselle only goes to Trier for the concert, you might want to take a look at Romantic Rhine & Moselle. It goes from Amsterdam to Basel (or vice versa), along with several days in the low countries, and several days on the Moselle. Although it doesn't dock in Trier, it does dock in Bernkastel, and one of the tour options from there goes to Trier. If you really want to go all out on Trier, I'd recommend going from Basel to Amsterdam. Although Scenic, like most river cruise lines, gives no indication of what the actual times in ports are, I've done some research on it, and it turns out that on the Basel->Amsterdam trip, the ship (on average) spends over 24 hours in Bernkastel, arriving around 7:30 in the morning and not departing until around 9am the following day. So if you're adventurous, you could take the ship tour to Trier in the morning, depart from the tour, and spend the whole day in Trier exploring, making your way back to Bernkastel via train/bus in the evening. It doesn't work as well in the opposite direction, since in that case the ship arrives (on average) in Bernkastel around 9:30p, leaving around 3:30p the next day, so not really giving a lot of opportunity to depart the ship tour, explore, and still get back before the ship leaves Bernkastel. But you at least still have the option of taking a Trier tour. 0852c4b9a8
