When Italy went into lockdown in 2020, weeks before the rest of Europe, the world was moved by opera singers regaling their neighbours from bedroom windows across ghostly cities and communities brought together in a time of unprecedented loneliness. This window to window comradery during the darkest days of the pandemic inspired the world.

After switching my Mac on, the first thing I did was play with the Dock for a bit because I love the Magnification effect on mouse hover so much. But little did I know, I would end up not liking it that much. Leaving aside how aesthetically appealing it is, it lacks one basic functionality: app thumbnail preview.

When you hover over the app icon in Taskbar, you get a tiny preview of each of the active windows, helping you decide which window you want to open. App thumbnail preview is much more than that. For example, when I listen to Spotify, I am so used to using the play, pause, forward, and backward buttons from that tiny thumbnail preview. It is so convenient that way versus how macOS does it. On a Mac, bringing those basic control options (that too in the form of a list view) will require you to right-click on the app icon, which should be the case when you want to do more than something as simplistic as changing the current song that is playing. However, the missing app thumbnail preview was never a deal breaker for me. I was more into wanting to explore how a Mac could improve my workflow and overall productivity.

I do not have nasty habits of cursing products because they can not perform certain functions the way I would like. There is an audience for everything. I am sure there are people who are equally or more dissatisfied after switching to Windows from Mac. For some people, macOS hits the right chord, but I am not part of that clique because the aforementioned features are absolutely a must for me. However, macOS did one thing for me: I now love Windows more than ever despite all its flaws!

You can head to Microsoft's repository to find some Windows 10-appropriate wallpaper, or do a quick Google search for "original windows 10 wallpaper" to find a site like Wallpaperaccess that has Windows 10 backgrounds.

I have a window in my shower, and when I moved in I struggled with what to do with it for privacy and light. I ended up going with cheap vinyl blinds that I can leave partially open for light, but not enough that people can see in (My neighbors house is only about 15 feet away from mine). I considered something like the frosting film, but most of the summer I have the window open. Do you guys ever have the windows open? Or any other ideas for this scenario?

Firstly, the Titanic caption made me laugh out loud (good thing I work from home), and secondly, the hint about using tape to separate the two sides of the film is genius! I love projects that cost little time or money, but make a huge/everyday impact!

I have a Simple Human Triple Wall Mount Pump in my bathroom and I looooove it ( -organization/shampoo-soap-dispenser.html). It also comes in single and double options. Holds a razor on the side. Dispenses the perfect amount of shampoo/conditioner/body wash. Did I mention I love it? I only wish it came in larger sizes so I could put face wash and the like in it to totally eliminate bottles in the shower.

A Large Pane would be something like a sliding glass door, or a storefront window; Medium Panes are usually from double-hung windows, or sliding-windows (e.g. 30"x30" inches); and  Small Panes are typically from bathroom windows, laundry-room windows, or individual pieces from a divided door/window (e.g. 10"x16" inches). Very Large & Very Small window panes are also priced separately.

I have spent some time with the new and improved Linked Table Manager (LTM) in Access over the past couple of months, and I have to say: I love it! Here are some of its best features from my point of view:

"The buildings we looked at were well insulated, but residents didn't fully understand the heating features, or the air recovery systems incorporated into the home," said Amelie Bauer, a researcher at Munich's Ludwig Maximilian University and one of the study's authors. "They stuck to their habits and kept opening windows to ventilate in accordance with their preferences."

In the study, Bauer and her colleagues highlighted the different ventilation and temperature preferences of two residents of the same apartment building. One was a German woman who kept her windows open so that her living room was a brisk 19 degrees. The other was a Greek man, who preferred his home to be a balmy 27 degrees.

"The correct way to ventilate a home is to employ the Stolften, or shock ventilation method. You open your windows completely for three minutes if it's windy, five to 10 minutes if it's not," said Raymond Galvin, a researcher at the University of Aachen and Cambridge, who has written extensively about energy efficiency in Germany.

"In a country like Germany, windowsills are prime real estate for potted plants that need light, and framed pictures of your favorite grandmother," Galvin said. "But in Germany, the windows open inward, and nobody has time to clear that all out twice a day to fully open the window, so instead, people just open their window to a slightly tilted position."

According to the researcher, it can take up to two hours to ventilate a room with windows that aren't fully open, and in that time, the walls cool fully, meaning more energy in needed to warm the room up again.

Galvin conceded that it was unlikely Germany would change such a fundamental element of its housing design, but said it was a shame that a country that was "generally very good at moderately high-tech design is bad at basic stuff like noticing that there's a socio-technical mismatch between residents' needs and what windows are designed to do."

My husband and I were in your shoes a little over three years ago. We looked online for resources and there weren't very many articles or information on this topic. So we had to learn as we went which isn't a lot of fun. I wanted to do a post on our new windows, even though I didn't take a lot of pictures or video as we went. I would have loved to been able to do a complete post on how to replace windows on an old house, but I think even just posting what our before and after looks like will be helpful! If you have any questions please leave a comment and I will do my best to answer them!

Here's a before and after picture of our house...old windows versus new! Here's a post I did about our 1950's cottage explaining what we've done so far and what else we'd like to do...

Our house was built in 1950 and the exterior walls are solid brick with plaster interior walls. I must say, I miss 2x4 wood framing. I am not a fan of our brick walls for several reasons, mostly being insulation factors. And it is really difficult to hang anything on plaster and brick walls, but that's an entirely different story. Our original windows were a solid metal frame, I believe steel or iron, with wood trim and single pane glass. At one time they were probably charming but through the years they deteriorated so bad we couldn't see the sense in trying to salvage them. A previous owner had also installed a single pane aluminum window on the inside of the original windows and it was difficult to open most of them and they just looked ugly.

These are some pics I took as we were in the depths of renovation as well as some new pics with our windows all finished off. After it was all said and done we ended up with three types of windows- a full frame renovation, a flush fin window installation, and a smaller fin/frame which got ordered by mistake and we didn't want to wait to return them so we made it work. By keeping the smaller fin/frame we had to buy exterior PVC trim to cover the frame so that increased the cost a bit.

This is a quick video to see what the flush fin windows look like when you install them-thank you Element Doors and Windows for this video. We actually only ended up with one flush fin window as I talked about up above but I like the looks of the flush fin trim the best. This house was a lot easier than ours too because the old windows weren't as old as ours were...

I love our new windows and do not regret the money spent. It's hard to say how much we spent but I would guess somewhere around $10-$15k between all the trim and tools needed. I think we could have gotten that cost down a lot if we had used pre-built windows instead of custom ordered sizes. Also, that price includes two sliding glass doors. I am going to do another post on how we created a patio on our side yard and how we put an 8' sliding glass patio door where a window was.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment and I will do my best to answer them! Don't let old windows stop you from buying a new house. We lived with our old windows for about 8 years before we could afford to replace them. But it was so worth the wait.

Cats love windows. Maybe you've gone for a walk and seen your neighbor's cat peering out the window as you passed. Or maybe you've seen your fuzzy feline catching a quick nap on your windowsill, blissfully soaking up the sun's rays.

Cats love hanging out in high places. In fact, they'll often seek the tallest place they can find. It hearkens back to their ancestors that hid in trees while hunting prey to get a better view (and could see any enemy predators coming from miles away). If your window provides any tall vantage point, you'll notice your cat spending a lot of time there.

If your kitty always sits at the window right when the sun is beaming through that spot, it's because he loves the warmth. A cat's natural body temperature is higher than a human's, so they prefer warmer spots. Similarly, if you have the window cracked just a little, he might be enjoying the scents and sounds of the outdoors. e24fc04721
