Intrasystem racing is a competition of speed that takes place within the Hyperbrasil system where competitors attempt to intercept a series of points in space as fast as possible. Aside from informal competition, the most popular intrasystem races are the Kepule Five, or K5, and the Hyperbrasil Regatta.
The Kepule Five is a race that happens once each year in the Kepule system. Racers are given the objective of completing a series of five intercepts of moons, stations, and other satellites orbiting Kepule. These five checkpoints are not regularly repeated and vary from year to year. Satellites are chosen by the Kepule Five Regulatory Committee and are not announced until the race begins. This is to prevent racers from planning routes in advance, as it would diminish the trajectory calculation portion of the competition. Because the course is different for each race, a racer's time is largely considered less important than a racer's final placement.
Exactly one sophont, who is the pilot, is allowed per craft. No form of communication with the pilot is allowed during the race, and any racer that breaks radio silence for non-emergency reasons is disqualified. This is to prevent the racers from receiving external assistance.Â
The K5 is categorized by mass class, with each class having a range of ten tonnes, with a maximum craft mass of 59.99 tonnes. There are six total mass classes, those being 0< (zero up), 10< (ten up), 20< (twenty up), 30< (thirty up), 40< (forty up), and 50< (fifty up). Race teams attempt to slim down their craft as much as possible, often removing everything except the essential propulsion and navigation systems. The most extreme racers may forgo food to save mass, and some even use space suits to save the mass of a life support system. No more than one stage is allowed per race craft, meaning nothing is allowed to be jettisoned except fuel and exhaust gasses.
The Hyperbrasil Regatta is the second most popular race in the Hyperbrasil system. It spans the entire system, rather than just the orbit of Kepule as seen in the K5.
