I am currently working as a postdoctoral fellow in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University under the mentorship of Prof. Rashmi K. Vinayak. Before joining CMU, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Electrical Engineering at KAIST under the supervision of Prof. Jaekyun Moon.
I received the B.S., M.S. (Thesis: Joint LDPC decoding and ISI channel detection) and Ph.D. (Thesis: Coding for distributed storage and computing) degrees in electrical engineering from KAIST in 2012, 2014, and 2018, respectively.
I have been studying the field of coding and information theory for distributed systems at a large scale. Specifically, I am interested in the design of low-latency large-scale distributed computing and cloud storage network systems by finding a sweet spot between the performance metrics such as reliability, fault tolerance, privacy, scalability, repair and storage efficiencies, etc.
Based on the results of the previous research on distributed storage and computing systems, my current focus is on developing efficient algorithms for large-scale distributed machine learning that trains an algorithm across multiple decentralized edge devices holding local data samples. I have focused on the theoretical side based on the practical needs so far, however, I would like to play a part in solving real-world problems and more challenging issues facing the industry.
