Objective
NASA’s next flagship mission, the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), is a next-generation large space telescope with a primary mirror of 6–8 meters in diameter, covering ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared wavelengths, and is planned for launch in the 2040s. Its primary science goals are: (1) to investigate the habitability and search for biosignatures in the atmospheres of exoplanets orbiting Sun-like stars, and (2) to advance a broad range of general astrophysics.
HWO aims to achieve a contrast ratio of 10 orders of magnitude through a highly stable telescope system combined with a high-performance coronagraph, enabling the direct imaging of Earth-like planets in the habitable zones of Sun-like stars. Furthermore, by analyzing atmospheric compositions via reflected-light spectroscopy, it will seek to identify indicators of habitability and potential signs of life.
In addition, observations using UV-NIR spectroscopic and imaging instruments will enable studies of atmospheric escape from terrestrial planets both within and beyond the Solar System, observations of plumes from icy moons in the Solar System, the formation history of galaxies through observations of the smallest structures in the early universe, and the cycling of matter within galaxies. These capabilities are expected to bring transformative advances to a wide range of astrophysical fields.
In Japan, participation in this mission is being considered through contributions to instrument development and science investigations, led by JAXA, NAOJ, and the HWO-J team. Currently, two instrument concepts are under consideration as primary contributions: (1) a near-infrared coronagraph instrument, and (2) an ultraviolet integral field spectrograph (IFS) and high-resolution spectrograph. The plan is to establish key enabling technologies—such as coronagraph masks, ultraviolet detectors, and diffraction gratings—by around 2029, followed by full instrument development.
In the US, the HWO Technology Maturation Project Office (HTMPO) is leading the study of the telescope architecture, while the Community Science and Instrument Team (CSIT) is advancing science and instrument definition. In addition, a U.S.-led call for proposals on instrument concept studies is expected in the near future, and discussions toward international collaboration are anticipated to rapidly gain momentum.
Against this background, the purpose of this workshop is to share the current status of HWO studies in both the US and Japan with the broader Japanese community, and to foster active discussions that will help establish a framework for broad community participation.
