If you want a heavy-duty, insulated hunting setup for your truck that keeps your gear secure and your feet warm in extreme cold, choose Hunthor Truck Gun Rack; if you need a precise hydraulic steering rack replacement to restore handling on older GM sedans and coupes, choose Guncmte Steering Rack. These two products occupy completely different worlds of utility, one designed for the rugged outdoors and the other for the mechanical restoration of classic American vehicles. Getting this distinction right is critical because confusing a seat-mounted hunting accessory with a critical chassis component would be a costly mistake for any buyer.
• Its trade-off is that it serves a very specific niche for winter hunters rather than general vehicle utility. This pick is for the serious outdoorsman who needs to keep firearms secure while staying dry and warm in deep snow.
• Guncmte Steering Rack: Its biggest strength is its direct fitment for a wide range of late 90s and early 2000s GM models, delivering power steering functionality with included inner tie rods and boots. This pick is for the DIY mechanic restoring a Malibu, Alero, or Cutlass who needs a reliable steering solution.
The Hunthor product line stands out immediately because it merges two distinct categories into a single, cohesive package for the winter hunter. The core of this system is a truck seat gun holder constructed from 900D oxford cloth. This material choice signals a focus on durability without adding unnecessary bulk. In the field, where gear gets tossed around in the back of a pickup bed or tucked into tight corners, scratch-proofing and structural integrity are non-negotiable. The 900D weave offers a level of toughness that standard canvas or lighter fabrics simply cannot match, ensuring your firearm stays protected against the elements and the rigors of outdoor transport.
While a gun rack alone might seem sufficient, the reality of winter hunting is that comfort dictates performance. These boots feature a fully waterproof rubber upper, which is essential when wading through icy rain, slush, or wetlands. No amount of insulation matters if water soaks through the exterior. The combination of the boot and the rack creates a complete kit for someone who values efficiency in their gear loadout. You aren't just buying a way to hold a gun; you are buying a system designed for survival in freezing conditions.
The thermal engineering here is equally impressive. This specific layering traps body heat effectively while managing moisture, preventing the clammy feeling that often ruins long days in the field. For a hunter spending hours sitting in a blind or stalking game in deep snow, this temperature rating is not a luxury; it is a necessity. If you plan to spend time in environments where hypothermia is a risk, this level of protection transforms a difficult day into a manageable one.
However, this product is not for everyone. If you are looking for a general-purpose storage solution for your vehicle that doesn't involve heavy insulation or hunting-specific features, this is overkill. The design is heavily skewed toward the winter hunting aesthetic and function. The installation process is straightforward, relying on straps that secure the upper portion to the headrest and the lower portion to the front seat backrest. While this makes it versatile across many truck models, it also means it is a temporary, non-permanent fixture. It is not a bolt-on component like a steering rack; it is an accessory that comes with you wherever you hunt. If you do not own a truck or do not engage in cold-weather hunting, the value proposition disappears entirely.

On the other side of the spectrum sits the Guncmte Steering Rack, a component that speaks directly to the mechanical heart of older General Motors vehicles. This is not an accessory; it is a critical safety and performance part. The primary use case here is restoration and repair for owners of Chevy Classic models (2004-2005), Malibus (1998-2003), Oldsmobiles, Pontiac Grand Am, Aleros, and Cutlasses from the late 90s and early 2000s. If you are driving one of these cars and experiencing vague steering, noise when turning, or fluid leaks, this unit is likely the solution you have been searching for.
The specifications highlight a robust, power-operated unit designed to replace worn-out factory parts. One of the most significant advantages of this Guncmte model is the completeness of the package. It is sold individually but includes everything needed for a proper installation: the rack itself, the necessary boots, and the inner tie rod ends. Many cheaper alternatives force you to buy these components separately, adding complexity and cost to the repair. By including the hydraulic power components and the inner tie rods, Guncmte streamlines the job for the mechanic. The part numbers listed—ranging from 17745446 to 26086616—cover a vast array of compatibility issues, ensuring that if your car falls within the specified years and models, this part will integrate seamlessly.
The physical nature of this component demands respect. That weight reflects the solid steel construction required to handle the forces exerted during steering, especially in heavier sedans and coupes. It is a "heavy duty" part in the literal sense, built to last under the stress of daily driving and road imperfections. The inclusion of hydraulic power operation ensures that the steering remains light and responsive, a stark contrast to the stiff, dangerous feel of a failing manual or partially failed power steering system.
This product is exclusively for those willing to dive into automotive repair. It requires specific knowledge of suspension geometry and torque specifications to install correctly. It is not a drop-in fix for the average driver who lacks tools or experience. Furthermore, its utility is strictly confined to the specific vehicle platforms mentioned. If you drive a Ford, Toyota, or even a newer GM model outside the 1998-2005 window, this part is useless to you. The fitment filter is not just a suggestion; it is a hard requirement. If your vehicle does not match the criteria, the part will not mount, regardless of how much you need a new steering rack. It is a precision tool for a specific job, offering no versatility beyond the designated GM platform.
When weighing these two distinct items, the decision matrix is entirely dependent on your vehicle type and your intended activity. There is no crossover in their applications, so the choice comes down to identifying which problem you are trying to solve.
• Best for Winter Hunting Gear → Hunthor Truck Gun Rack. If your goal is to carry firearms securely in a truck while keeping your feet warm in sub-zero temperatures, this is the only logical choice.
• Best for Vehicle Restoration → Guncmte Steering Rack. If you own a 1998-2005 GM sedan or coupe and your steering is loose or noisy, this is the critical component needed to make the car safe and drivable again.
• Best for Durability in Harsh Elements → Hunthor Truck Gun Rack. The 900D oxford cloth and rubber boot uppers are engineered specifically to withstand snow, ice, mud, and abrasion, whereas the steering rack is designed for road wear.
• Best for Mechanical Safety → Guncmte Steering Rack. A functioning steering rack is a matter of life and death. This product restores the fundamental control of the vehicle, a capability the gun rack provides zero of.
• Best for Ease of Installation → Hunthor Truck Gun Rack. The strap-based system allows for quick mounting and removal without tools or mechanical expertise. The steering rack requires lifting the vehicle, removing old components, and precise torque alignment.
• Best for Temperature Specificity → Hunthor Truck Gun Rack. Rated for -10°F, this system is a specialized tool for extreme cold weather, offering a feature set that has no equivalent in automotive hardware.
• Best for Long-Term Vehicle Value → Guncmte Steering Rack. Replacing a worn steering rack extends the usable life of a classic car, preserving its value and safety, whereas the gun rack is an expendable accessory.
In my opinion, if I were standing in a garage deciding between these two, the answer depends entirely on what I am doing next week. If I am heading out to a frozen lake for ice fishing or walking through a snowy forest with a rifle, I would grab the Hunthor Truck Gun Rack without hesitation. The combination of the heavy-duty gun holder and the -10°F rated boots addresses a very specific, high-stakes need for personal safety and comfort in the wild. It is a comprehensive solution for the winter outdoorsman that solves two problems at once.
Conversely, if I was sitting in my driveway with a 2000 Chevy Malibu that felt like it was drifting off-center every time I turned the wheel, I would reach for the Guncmte Steering Rack. It is the only path to restoring the safety and handling of that specific vehicle. Without this part, the car is dangerous to drive. For electric vehicles, neither of these products is a primary solution, but the Hunthor rack aligns better with the lifestyle of EV owners who may prioritize outdoor adventures and eco-conscious travel, whereas the steering rack is purely for internal combustion legacy vehicles. Ultimately, choose the Hunthor for the adventure and the Guncmte for the drive.
The Hunthor Truck Gun Rack uses a universal strap system that fixes the upper strap around the headrest and the lower strap around the front seat backrest. While it fits most standard truck configurations, you should verify your seat dimensions before purchase to ensure the straps reach securely.
