Frequently asked questions

What is a PhD?

A PhD is training to become a researcher. You will learn how to plan and conduct rigorous research and how to communicate the outcome of your research to academic and non-academic stakeholders, by conducting a large independent research project. A PhD project typically consists of three phases: 1) literature review, 2) data gathering and analysis, 3) communicating research findings. Each phase takes approximately a year and is conducted independently by the PhD candidate with ongoing and extensive supervision from supervisor(s).

How long does a PhD take?

This is a bit like asking 'how long is a string'. It is hard to say how long it takes to do a PhD as this depends on the project, the candidate, and their life circumstances throughout the candidature. The funding will last for 3 years with the option of getting a funding extension for another 6 months. It is typically expected that the candidate will finish within this time. However, there are circumstances where a candidate decides to go part time, or to take extended leave, e.g. parental leave. This will extend the candidature.

Can I work while doing a PhD?

Yes. You are able to work (a bit) while doing a PhD. It is, however, recommended that any work undertaking during the candidature is relevant to your PhD project. This could, for example, include taking on research assistant activities or conducting lecturing or tutoring. Such activities will be paid. If you want to work more than one day per week, then part time candidature is recommended. A part-time PhD takes 6-7 years, and the funding options are different from full-time PhDs.

Do I have to pay tuition fees?

If your application is successful then you will not have to pay tuition fees as you will be awarded a fee-free-place at RMIT. However, if you application is not successful, then you are welcome to still come and study a PhD at RMIT with your own funding.

What is a PhD scholarship?

A PhD scholarships allows you to study for free at RMIT and to receive a forthnightly stipend (salary). The standard PhD stipend rate at RMIT is $31,000 per annum. This stipend is exempt from tax.
