Type %temp% into your Windows search bar, and open the latest HP Installation folder which starts with 7z (e.g. 7z1234S)m there you would find an Autorun.inf driver you may use to manually install the printer driver

For instance the 7740 driver above needs administrator approval to install on workstations vs other drivers not extracted like the process above. Installing the drivers on individual machines is a bit of a pain in addition to the having to extract the drivers.

The bigger issue with the 7740 driver is that it isn't "package aware". If the driver isn't package aware, it will not install the driver from the print server if the the driver is labeled "false" in Print Management.

Packaged is a column in the Drivers tab on the print server Print Management console. This is due to a somewhat recent KB from my research that buttoned up some print server related hack. GPO settings were unsuccessful as well... even not prompting for installing or disabling administrator needing to install drivers.

The fix is to either use an updated driver that is package aware (doesn't seem to be one for the 7740) or do a regedit on the print server changing this key for the drivers, PrinterDriverAttributes to the next numerical value... if it's a 2 make it a 3. Then restart the print spooler service, refresh Print Mangement and now it shows are true in the packaged column.

With Version 40.12.1161 of the driver, at least it found the printer in the network and finished the installation. After installation only the scanner drivers where available, but printer still had "Driver is unavailable"

Today I tried installing the new driver version 40.15.1230 (released November 23th 2021). At startup I get the option to select the network printer at the correct TCP/IP address, but after a few minutes te installation fails because the printer is not found.

Install the basic printer driver and set it up manually, so you can at least get the drivers installed. At this time no printer is installed although it is found. Do not select the found printer, the driver will be unavailable after install.

The driver you are installing is likely a Microsoft driver not the HP driver. I see that even the basic driver download is an .exe. Try extracting all the files from the .exe by opening the file with 7 zip and then extracting everything to a folder and when you install manually, when prompted for driver, select have disk and browse to the folder you extracted the file to.

But it failed again. When choosing HP SMart (recommened) it finds the printer in the network and it looks good. But when I want to print a document HP smart wants to install the printer which ends up with the same issue "driver is unavailable"

When I try to install the full driver, the printer is not found in the network. When I enter the ip-address manually the installation looks fine. The printer is installed with the correct name, but only the scanner functionallity seems to be available and again saying "driver is unavailable".

Hi everyone, I've been having a problem with our OfficeJet Pro 7740. When we bought it, it worked just fine, but as of late, everytime I try to print, the printer freezes and displays the following image:

I've tried several solutions I found in these forums, including partial and full reset, updating firmware, reinstalling drivers, using HP's support software, etc. Nothing has helped. I can still scan and print with ePrint just fine, I just cannot print directly from my PC. Finally, I opened a case with HP, all they told me was to switch the driver to the HP Deskjet 9800. This worked, and I've been happily printing since then. However, I have to print some 11X17 pages, and the Deskjet 9800 driver has a single tray, so I cannot print the larger pages without switching trays (a huge inconvenience). So here are the questions, has anyone else had this problem, has anyone else solved this problem, and if not, are there any alternative drivers which will still maintain the full functionality of the printer and (even better than HPs official driver) works?

After speaking with two different technicians at the customer support center, the second person made a brilliant observation (I really wish I had written down her name, because she deserves a lot of credit) which, it appears, was the cause of the problem all along! It is not really a driver issue, more like a limitation of the driver.

Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. Through this app I can print internal reports, such as "Printer Status Report", and I can still print through ePrint, but as soon as I try printing any document (from within the HP Smart App or not), I get the same blue screen. I tried converting the driver back to the DeskJet 9800, and I can again print, but only with limited functionality (as mentioned in the OP).

Click Have Disk once reaching the printer selection pane and paste the 7z folder path located above, then complete the wizard and use the 7730 driver, that should allow similar capabilities as your original printer driver.

If you had a standalone HP driver I could easily update it, but you've bound yourself to this software sequence that doesn't allow advanced users like myself to intervene and just install the driver at the point where the software fails (activation).

Hp officejet pro 7740 driver wont install on windows xp pro 32 bit sp3 The hp installation file for xp 32 bit won't work. It keeps saying "hp-dqex5.exe file encountered a problem..."after I clicked on the installation file and after it extracts. I tried remove some printers and printer installation files, but still not working. I tried unzipping to a folder with 7zip and I still get the same error.

A client purchased a HP Officejet Pro 7740 to replace an older model Officejet Pro printer. She installed the printer herself and connected it to the LAN via Wifi and followed setup instructions that came with the paper - can print successfully but could not Scan to Computer. She is not tech saavy. She calls me in, the IT Consultant.I decided to standardize the setup as we do for printers: Static IP, Disable IPV6, did some initial Ping testing (1-6ms delay, no packets loss etc)I set the IP Addressing mode to Static (IPV4).I disregarded her setup and decided to install the Driver and Software from scratch. I removed her installed printer from Devices and Printers (not from Add/Remove Programs/Software)I went to HP's website to obtain what I hoped to be the "Full Feature Software and Drivers" like in the older times.I instead was directed to "Install HP Smart" which I did. The printer installed and test prints are fine. Scans initiated from the HP Smart App for Windows 10 Professional x64 work well as expected. The problem is when I try to do the Scan to PC/Computer option from the copier. At first, the computer on the LAN were not listed on the printer. So I thought maybe I have to Enable "Scan to PC" and set it to AutoStart from the Printer Software like in the good old days. My initial look into this method was futile because things are now different, because it's different software. Instead what I did was go into the settings of the Printer from via the HP Smart App to check scan settings. I was presented with a message which said "Scan to Computer disabled, Please check with the Administrator that installed the printer". I went to HPs website to do research and I was directed to run HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows. I did run it and it stuck on checking "WIA SCAN" after about 25 minutes of scanning without completing. I decided to stop it.I did recall that up to that point, everything checked out, inclusive of the driver. At this point (which I don't recall clearly) HP's software did allow me to download additional software to install or fix the issue and I decided that this was all too lengthy and complicated for a printer Install. I decided to do this over on a separate Windows 10x64 Professional PC with the exact same results as documented above, with Printing working, scanning working only when initiated from the HP Smart App. From this point: I removed the printer from Devices and Printers and I tried obtaining the driver entitled "HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One series Basic Driver - IT Professional Use only (hey, that's me!!)" in the support section of HP's website for the printer. I was hopeful, because then I ran this install, it very much resembles the install of the good old Officejet 8600 pro days! Everything checked out! I opened the familiar Printer icon on the desktop, and I Enabled "Scan to Computer" and set it to AutoStart when Windows starts up! I went to the Printer to do a Scan to Computer and the Name of the computer showed up! I tried to scan and almost immediately, a prompt entitled "HP Scan" popped up on the Windows Desktop with the red "X" message (see attached photo) saying "The HP OfficeJet Pro was not found" At this point, I decided to call it quits and seek out help.It could be my firewall application. I didn't disable it.Computer security is important to us,- and what I would prefer is to whitelist the IP Address of the printer and the specific port number/s for scanning to work properlyCan anyone advise on a way forward? Thank you.I appreciate your knowledge as it will help me to technically understand how HP Printers/Scanners work today. It seems so complicated but I wish to say very soon that it was due to a lack of my understanding and it really is a piece of cake! Please see 3 attached screenshots via this Google Drive Link: =sharing Opens a new window.I am also wondering..do I have to specify my gateway and dns settings on the printer..I did not remember doing that at all! I will recheck in due course and post update here.Thank you! 2351a5e196
