Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet and the USB cable is connected directly to the computer. (not a docking station) The USB cable shouldn't be longer than 6 feet.Try another USB port on the computer.
If i ignore the RFU warning and continue will it screw up the printer? last time it stopped working but after windows update and a couple of powercuts it started working again somehow (with the old firmware still)

thanks - tried that but unfortunately the program (image capture or 10.8.2 in general) doesnt recognize my scanner at all (the list of devices is just blank). Its as if the multifunction laser printer all of a sudden became just a printer with no scanner. However, the multifunction printer still works fine when connected to another Mac using an older operating system so I know the device is working.
its a USB connection. Yes tried re-installing all the drivers, restarting multiple times etc. I'm realizing there's a whole series of HP devices that no longer support scan functionality in 10.8.2 but I cannot believe there isnt a solution(?) I can only imagine how many thousands of these multifunciton printers are still around (its not an antiquated device at all). I'll defenitely return my brand new macbook air for a windows laptop if the only solution is buying a new printer.
