Places to Explore Over Break
By Rocky Gao
Irvine Lake Shore Fishing
The largest body of freshwater in Orange County reopened as of Aug. 17, offering an opportunity to see life up close in the 750-acre man-made reservoir. During Winter Break from Friday to Sunday, people can fish without a license at the Irvine Lake. Fishers can catch panfish, bass, catfish, sunfish, carp, crappie, trout and bluegill. Though fishing requires patience, the serene atmosphere and the abundance of fish make it well worth the wait.
San Joaquin Marsh Reserve
200 bird species have been sighted at the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve, making it the perfect place to sneak a peek at migratory birds during the winter season. Among the birds that inhabit the marsh are two endangered species: the light-footed clapper rail and the California least tern. The reserve’s close proximity to UCI makes it a popular spot for nature lovers. Explore the natural roots of Irvine and discover intriguing bird species anytime between dawn and dusk.
Holidayz at the Park
Fun awaits Irvine residents at Holidayz at the Park this holiday season in the Orange County Great Park from Nov. 23-Dec. 31. This event transforms the park into a snow globe filled with Santa-themed attractions, fake snow, gingerbread houses and festive music. Take a stroll through Palm Courts under palm trees decorated with Christmas lights and marvel at “Air Santa,” a Christmas themed, larger-than-life airplane which honors the military background of Great Park. Attendants can take holiday photos with a 20-foot tree, a 10-foot illuminated ornament and giant snowflakes.
Tanaka Farms
Start Winter Break with a Holiday Farm Tour offered by Tanaka Farms. These wagon tours show off the winter vegetables grown on the 30-acre farm and provide pictures with Santa on a hilltop named Tanaka Land from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 14-15. After the tour, participants can wander the corn maze and interact with the barn animals of Santa’s Stables which include donkeys, bunnies, goats and more. Tanaka Farms is the perfect place to enjoy the jolly atmosphere of the holidays, if you love the outdoors.
Irvine Spectrum
Through December, the Irvine Spectrum Center is providing Winter-themed attractions for family and friends. An ice rink is open during the entire month. With the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas, the attraction is open from 3-11 p.m. Santa is also there, at Palm Court, ready to take photos with family and pets until Dec. 24. For entertainment, the Spectrum’s 75-foot tree will be the center of a nightly tree lighting ceremony, accompanied by choreographed light shows. These shows are on from Nov. 29-Dec. 24 from 5-11 p.m. at the Giant Wheel Court.
